Sony Digital8 records a digital signal onto standard 8mm or Hi8 tape. It is possible, according to Sonys claims, to record up to 500 lines of resolution on a Digital8 tape. The compression allows you to record only an hour of video on the standard 120 minute 8mm and Hi8 tapes. The format is advantageous; Hi8 and 8mm tapes are widely available and are cheaper than the MiniDV tapes that most consumer digital video cameras use. The format offers 16-bit PCM digital audio, which MiniDV tapes also provide. It is a possibility to edit or copy your videos digitally using the IEEE1394 or FireWire digital Interface with the Digital8 camcorders. The camcorder has a 20x optical zoom and a 360x digital zoom. It has the Control L editing protocol, which allows you to edit. The camcorder has a 2.5-inch LCD screen and a color viewfinder. A great feature about this camcorder is the 15-hour battery that allows for extended recording periods. Personally, I am partial to the 310, the greatly priced Digital8, and all the other features accompanying it. The manual focus ring is great especially because of that "hands on" focus feel. There is a nice variable speed zoom and the controls are nicely positioned when you hold the camera. The multiple outputs (S, Composite, and FireWire) provide the possibility to hook up to any source. The built-in microphone is not great, but it functions and, relative to other cameras, it is sufficient. If you're looking for a cheap and good digital camera, this is it. In General, the D8 is good because of its low price. This camcorder is the best D8 because of its color viewfinder and additional features (unlike the 7000 model). The viewfinder in the 310 model is fine in size so there is no reason upgrade to the DCR-TRV510 unless the viewfinder will be used a great deal.
