Xbox 360 PC Monitor and Speakers

You can't do this at all without destroying the factory composite out cable as it covers the opening for the hdmi. You have to purchase a proprietary adapter to do it. I have tried to do this myself and studied the issue at length.

Wow, really? That is poor design. I haven't done this on xbox, only ps3, but I assumed it would work just the same.

Nope My PS3 is hooked to my pc screen via hdmi to dvi at present while my Xbox is in storage since I won't use it on a tube tv and I won't destroy it to hack it to a pc screen. The adapter to do it is available on ebay. It it just a composite out that doesn't block the hdmi out.

Personally I have
360 > HDMI to Monitor > Optical to PC > 2 3.5mm audio leads out to my speakers (which carry PC sound and the 360 sound routed through it).

My monitor has an optical out for this purpose. You can buy a specific analogue lead for the 360 which has an optical-out.
