Call me old school but I use FreeNAS for my backups, just a few scripts to transfer files over via SMB and AFP on the macbook. I use a jump drive for documents. I don't trust the cloud.
hhmmm, since its ARM based you could look into Android or even see if you can get the Rasberry-Pi distro of Debian or Ubuntu to run on it.

If you can toss in more memory I would go with Ubuntu 12. Since having 3GB is like have 128MB of ram these days I would use a small minimal distro. Maybe even a BSD distro like PC-BSD.
I use Debian when I can. DD-WRT on one of my routers. Trying to persuade my wife to ditch Windows on the main desktop, sadly it isn't fast enough to push Wine to run Sims3.
