    can you go into bios and disable boot by usb? there should be an option to boot with usb devices. try that and see if it helps any

    also with most distros of linux you are running as a limited user and the system asks for permission to temp log in as root to do system tasks.

    I agree as well. with the age of the board it could very likely be bad. one way to test is take out ALL ram and try a boot. if the speaker doesnt beep at you with a bios warning then it isnt running the POST test . ie bad board. that usually works

    try running memtest with one stick of memory at a time in different slots till you stop getting an error. then you will know which one is bad

    yes. and you can partition it in different filesystems for different OS's as well. IE linux etc. it is just an addition to the filetable that "divides" the drive up.

    ditto to what he said . I just wanted to add, DO NOT use this computer for any purchases online etc or anything with personal info until you get it cleaned. most likely there are keyloggers too .
