Re: Today I have... Medicine would be a bit similar to tech, seeing as things change rapidly in that domain as well. But they will use what they learn in med school, every day.

Please help to bring mac back to life.

If the Mac goes into Mac OS X by default, try unplugging the mouse and keyboard and just have the power cable connected. I have seen Macs that get stuck on the loading wheel and when turned off and booted without anything plugged in, they got in OS X just fine. Then you just replug your mouse...

Please help to bring mac back to life.

Maybe something stupid to try, but for the Mac booting problem, I have seen some Macs that stay stuck on the spinning circle because of peripherals. Unplug everything except the power cable and try to boot into Mac OS X. Maybe then we could get a OS X version, if you can get in.

    Converting to MAC ~ YIKES!

It all comes down to preference in my opinion. I have Windows, Mac and Linux at home and they work well. It depends on what you want to do, I bought my MacBook to use for school and to get a feel of Mac when I started my job, as there are a lot of profs that use them. I must say this though, the...

    Server Craze

It does indeed. Before the whole Linux home server thing, I had Windows 7 with shares. And I did backups of my user profile using a robocopy task in the task scheduler.

    Making a secure login

In order to setup the Active Directory, yes you would need a version of Windows Server. As for your second question, I do not know, unfortunately :P

    Server Craze

My home server runs on Ubuntu Server 12.04 LTS (there is no GUI). I would recommend a Linux installation, Mint works well but you can also install Ubuntu if you feel more comfortable (doesn't have to be server edition). Depending on how you want to set up your backup, you will want Samba shares...

    Making a secure login

As DistraughtSysop said, an AD would probably do the job well. (I unfortunately do not have a step by step). You can then make your 3 VMs with Windows 7 Professional, join them to your domain so that the remote users use their domain credentials. I think Remote Desktop would work well for...

    Thoughts on Ubuntu

I agree with the general theme, especially since you will be doing mostly web browsing, some form of Linux would be great. I too recommend Linux Mint over Ubuntu, though I have been using Ubuntu for a while. You will need to get your head around the way Linux works for a bit, but once you get...

Anybody use linux for an HTPC?

I am in the same boat as you are, I love Linux and would like to have more time to fiddle with it. I currently have the latest version of Ubuntu installed on my main rig (alongside a Windows 7 hard drive for my gaming needs). I have a home server, which runs Ubuntu Server 10.04 LTS (IIRC)...

How are you guys backing up?

I haven't set up my backup yet for my Linux partition. I have a couple long weekends coming up where I was going to fiddle with my choices. In the research I have seen, the trend seems to be what you have encountered, lots of people using rsync and recently more people talking about...
