Got an update. When I restart my computer, the drive behaves fine as long as I only read from it. As soon as I try to write to it, regardless of the program doing the operation, the drive seems to be unable to retrieve information on the contents of its folders. Every single folder entry...
Not yet, I am terrified that I'll irreversibly mess something up by physically tinkering with the drive, so I'll be using that option as a last resort. I'm terrible with my hands.
Interesting development. The drive seems to really slow down when I shift the preview mode from "details" to "icons". I use the drive to store a lot of pictures and videos, being a photographer/videographer, and that really seems to slow it down.

I ran the chkdsk tool with both boxes checked. I did it overnight since I knew it was going to take a while. I woke up twice after 5 and 6 hours (my PC is damn loud), and it had frozen on "3458 files processed" - the progress bar was maybe 10% of the way across the screen.

Sadly, my PC is very loud and my case fan controller came broken. Plus, I won my PC in a contest so nothing's warrantied. It's not that big of a deal. Would just prefer a solution oriented around the program causing the problem.
I'm confident about my network, but I am running an old version of uTorrent's client (3.2.3), because I was having problems with the newest version unrelated to this particular issue. However, this problem has been with me for a year, across several versions of the client.
Title says it all. I have to manually close out of uTorrent before I sleep my PC, because if I don't, my computer will wake without internet connectivity for 5+ minutes.

As I said, I was running chkdsk as I wrote the post. Running it with just the top box checked, it said there were no problems, but running it with both boxes is taking FOREVER, because it is processing files, each one taking 10-20 seconds.
