I agree, PRTG is free up to 100 sensors but that goes quick, can be useful for network infrastructure monitoring then use Spiceworks for the computers and other hardware. Both are great products.

Well if you want to see the actual wire speed you would want to use iperf to test, which will test from the nic and not the OS. there are some public server on the internet if you search for em. You're probably closer to that 900 then you think.

Powershell! Remote desktop manager, solarwinds free tools can be usefull, I use their ip address tracker. Spiceworks can be powerfull as well.

you might want to look into some sort of NPS which would prevent issues like you described. But that can be complicated depending on your network. Maybe a remote syslog would be a good place to start.
