XP exe problem

I had a virus on my computer but I managed to get rid of it but now I can't open any exe files.
I've tried the instructions @ When you run an .exe file on a Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7-based computer, the file may start a different program but they didn't work.
I'm running XP pro 32bit, please help me

Check that site and follow the full guide for XP. If you are not able to open a file, any file, then the infection is not gone. Moved to proper area.
