I have a Dell laptop, with windows XP Pro, fully updated to SP3. I still use AOL Desktop 9.6 version, which has a hijacker virus that keeps opening windows with ib.adnxs.com on the tabs.
It's only on this AOL version, which I have a few different AOL ones.

First I ran Spybot Search and Destroy. Found a bunch of stuff. Deleted them.
Then Malwarebytes found one more thing. Removed it.

Virus was still activating, so let's move onward.

A page on Google told me to do a few things. I did them. This is what I did so far.
I ran Roguekiller.

I was then told to remove these programs from Add/Delete Files,
â—¦AppNexus
â—¦Convert Files
â—¦LyricsSaver
â—¦MyPC Backup
â—¦Video Player
Non of them were present in the list.

I then ran AdwCleaner.

Then I ran the Junkwaare removal tool. Here is that log:

Then I Reset the Internet Explorer on the Advanced tab.

Then I ran Malwarebytes again, and cleaned out anything that came up. Rebooted.

Then did a full scan with Avira Free Antivirus, and rebooted.

I thought it was clean, but the pop up pages started again today.

I ran a Hijackthis scan. Here is the log file.

Any ideas?

Thank you.

Allan

Only thing that I saw that looked fishy was this entry:
O16 - DPF: {03A89EFD-E023-C100-A22D-45F77558EB4C} (ILINCInstall121 Class) - https://content12.ilinc.com/download/AXCltInst121.dll

I'd also give ComboFix a run: ComboFix Download

Also, go to Start -> run -> type 'msconfig' and click Run -> go to the Startup tab and disable everything except for your AV. Reboot and then run MBAM again.

Ideally you should be moving off of XP... there are no more security updates for it as it is End of Life from Microsoft. I'd recommend you move up to at least Windows 7.

Thank you for helping.

I ran the combo fix and then MBAM exactly how you recommended. I just ran a HJT and that line you thought was suspicious is not there any more. I haven't opened the AOL browser yet. I'll work on it a little and let you knowif it comes back in the next few days.

Here's my log from today:

How does it look now?

Allan

Much better looking.

I will say, I would strongly suggest moving away from XP and up to at least Win7.

XP is End of Life and is subsequently no longer receiving security patches/updates. So any security vulnerabilities that exist for XP...will not be patched.

The ad Nexus pop ups just started again, so I still have it.

What next?

Thank you,

Allan

Did you make sure to look in MSConfig and disable all but your AV in the Startup tab like I suggested?

Would be a good idea to turn OFF System Restore so it deletes all the old restore points (some malware likes to hide in system restore), and then re-enable it.

After that, run MBAM/ComboFix/AdwCleaner/HJT again, but do it in Safe Mode this time.

Post the logs here again.

Also, double check to see if you have any programs installed that could be doing this (toolbars, coupon programs, smiley/cursor packs, etc.).

Also make sure you look in ALL browsers' add-ons/extensions - Chrome/FF/IE - whatever you have installed.

Yes, I stopped all startups except the AV. I'll try the safe mode now. I don't see any bad add on in IE. I'll let you know when I'm done.
Thanks.

I did everything you said, how you said.

For some reason the Malwarebytes log didn't save the info. It got rid of about 17 threats.

Here is the HJT log:

What do you think? I haven't opened that particular AOL browser yet.

Allan

Log looks clean as far as I can tell.

Did AdwCleaner or Combofix find anything else?

Have you checked your AOL browser to see if it has any add-ons/plug-ins that are malicious?
