How Does Usenet Work in a Technical Sense?

I've searched through a lot of articles on google, yahoo, and other search engines. I've looked at videos on youtube and did a search here. None of which helped me understand the technical aspect of Usenet.

I've not used Usenet but I understand the basic concept. What I am interested in is a few technical things.

1.) How does one Usenet server connect to another Usenet server? Is it all done over IP and only over IP? Was it always this way?

2.) I read you don't have to be on the internet to use Usenet. How is doe this work? Do you have to install a set of protocols and use a dial up modem? (Yes I know you can access it online.)

3.) How does one create a Usenet server? What sort of standards are there?

4.) Usenet predates the internet by 10 years. How did it work, on a technical level, at that point in time? Is it still the "same" today?

5.) How do Usenet servers determine where other Usenet servers are. How do Usenet servers contact the other Usenet servers? Is there something similar to a DNS database?

6.) What other technical aspects would be interesting to learn about Usenet?

Knowledge is appreciated
