Default me > xp network issue

i have one me computer networked with several xp machines. just recently the internet stopped working on the me computer, but i can still 'see' the shared folders on the xp computers. the tcp settings are: dns config: disable dns wins config: disable wins res ip add: obtain an ip address auto all other settings are blank. i'm not sure if someone in the office messed with the settings, but the internet was working just fine a week ago.

Any reason you are still using ME? It is end of life and will just become a security risk the longer it sits there...

It sounds like all your settings are good… do you have a firewall installed on the computer that maybe someone unintentionally blocked the web browser?

I’d defiantly look into upgrading to XP.

how is your network setup? is it ICS you're using or a router?

I'm afraid I know very little about ME so I might not be able to help you.

using me because it's only used on a limited basis for a few functions. there is a firewall, but i don't think it's blocking the browser as i've gone through the permissionis.

using a router. peer-to-peer.

the problem started when someone cleared something in the tcp settings. i just don't know what was changed!

Have you compared the settings to one of the XP machines? It shouldn’t differ too much

So it did work b4 ?
on the me pc
click start
then run
then type
cmd or command ( cmd is for 32bit PC command for 16 )
one or the other
then hit enter
then type
ping yahoo.com or microsoft.com ...etc
hit enter
you should get a reply back

are you using static or dynamic ip addresses ?
also while you have the command prompt open
type
ipconfig/all
hit enter
what does it show , compare to xp machine
more than likely it is that firewall ,,, what make of firewall ?

so long as the network card is the to automatically find its IP address and DNS and the router is a DHCP server there shouldn't be a problem.

you can confirm the IP is ok by running the "ipconfig" command from the command prompt. result should look the same as one of the XP machines but with a different IP.
you might try the "ipconfig/renew" command.

Also you can check internet connectivity by pinging an external site by name and by IP, e.g. "ping www.google.com" and "ping 64.233.183.147"

if the domain name ping fails but the ip ping succeeds the its a DNS issue, in XP (not sure about ME) you can view your current DNS server by using the command "netsh diag show dns" or if you have a static IP it will show up on the "ipconfig" printout.
your DNS server should I imagine be the ip of your router.
