Connect Network Printer to ?

Hello,

I've been told that a network printer should always be connected directly to the network router rather than to a switch.

I've also been told that the network printer CAN be connected directly to a switch as long as the switch is intelligent (managed), like a Cisco switch.

Comments?

Did this person tell you why? I'm curious about the explanation.

Connecting a network printer to an unmanaged switch is fine. I can't think of any reason why you shouldn't do that.

Yeah, We have all our network printers on switches..

Thanks for the quick replies. So much for relying on the salespeople at Staples! I should of researched this matter a little further before posting the question.

Sounds like sales pitch to me - routers generally are more expensive. Obviously that person is clueless and you should let them know.
