| Re: new computer No, you don't have to have Windows; you can go with just Linux if you want.

| Re: new computer Hardware support is definitely something to consider. When you buy a computer from Best Buy or wherever, you're buying a computer tailored to Windows, hence why everything always "seems to work" on a brand new computer. With Linux, you're taking an operating system who's attempt is to support every-fricken-piece-of-hardware-in-existence and cram it into 1 single footprint for all to enjoy, so there have been dead ends before with specific hardware who refuses to support their devices with Linux like they should. Time has changed though, and quite honestly, I've taken a lot of chances when it came to hardware support and always lucked out. The big thing I've done, partially based on personal preference to begin with (though Linux is better supported in this arena) is using Nvidia graphics cards. ATI has always left something to be desired for me. Even Broadcom is better these days, though I still prefer my Intel wireless chips given the choice.

| Re: new computer ATI never really worked for me either. NVIDIA has so much more support in that regard.
I always used Atheros. |

| Re: new computer I'm in the same basket as Jayce, I usually just gamble on hardware support and it almost always works. I've only had a few instances where I've had to put effort in to get hardware working; a couple of dialup modems, ATI graphics can be a bit of a pain, nVidia back in the day wasn't great either but once you'd familiarised yourself with the setup it was a breeze, some issues with WiFi adapters. For the most part, things will work out of the box.
