ATI overtakes nVidia in discrete graphics marketshare

Honestly I didn't either. ATI has really done a good job on the last two generations but I thought Nvidia's marketing would have allowed them to maintain a lead for another generation or two.

IMO for the most part ATi has been making better products then nvidia for over 2 years so it was going to happen sooner or later.

The reason for this is because ATI had such a jump on the gun having the 5 series out way longer than Nvidia could overcome their Fermi problems. What didnt help is the initial release bashing that put a sour taste in peoples mouths when Fermi was released. If Nvidia gets their heads outa their asses and realize ATI is on the up and up they will get it right next gen.

The next generation of cards from ATI and nVidia will either make or break nVidia. Well, not so much 'make' as 'keep them in the game', but if they stuff up again they're history.

IMHO; the real battle starts at 28nm :wink_tongue:
seems like the HD 6000 series is a refresh of HD 5000 series from what I've read... don't know how much performance gain though.
still no ideas about GF106 and GF108.

Nvidia will still be 'in the game' for quite some time. The only question is how competitive they'll be.

Getting the 5000 series cards out was very well planned and executed; not only being able to get decent yields on TSMC's troublesome 40nm process, but also getting the entire lineup out in a relatively short time.

Anyway, the 6000 series is kind of a stopgap. It uses the same shader processors in the 5000 series, but uses the off-core logic of the next generation GPU's.
The reason Southern Islands even exists is because TSMC are having trouble getting their 28nm process working. It's something they're doing 'in the meantime' while they're stuck on 40nm.
Who knows, maybe they'll choose to use GlobalFoundries instead for Northern Islands?

You might consider it worth it to wait for NI and skip SI if you already have a HD 5000 series card.

NVIDIA lost out on a lot of monies by having to wait so long to introduce Fermi...and how Fermi was so fail when it finally did launch.

Things are changing since GF104 though
