WE HAVE MOVED. Please see our NEW Computer Forums |
11-9-2009: Sorry for the inconvenience. We finally upgraded to vBulletin 3 !! See you there, Larry about motherboardsGo to the Tech-Forums Discussion Home PagePosted by: geo3tech what makes a motherboard better then other motherboards? As you can see, i'm pretty new in the computer industry and want some tips to choosing the best motherboards with the price that i want. some tips plz?? =) Posted by: Circa219 Motherboards are tricky. I guess what make some better than others are the chipsets, wether it supports Dual Channel, and ofcourse, the type of processor it accomodates. Do a little research and check out some benchmarks at tomshardwareguide.com Posted by: Kangaroo The architecture can make a board faster, along with a good chipset that supports lots of features, SATA, AGPx8, Wi-Fi, Dual Channel, DDR2 main memory... Also, as a lot of builders know, the layout of the board means a lot. Sometimes the AGP card can get in the way when you try and remove a stick of RAM, you have to remove the VGA card first. You should also check what you get bundled with the board, some boards bundle Norton Anti-virus/Internet Security 2004... also check to see if you get round IDE cables and round Floppy cables... There is a lot to check when getting a motherboard. Posted by: knuckle50 Yes, the worst thing you could possibly do is buy the parts for a computer uninformed, I ended up with a piece of **** motherboard and graphics card because of it. Posted by: Icedragon Yes mobos take alot of research to find the right one to do the things you want it to do. Posted by: Gl\l0m!$h many many factors cpu socket, memory speed, amount of memory slots, dual channel or no, pci slots, agp speed, layout, chipset, and probably about 50 more! Posted by: leandroc76 I'd wait for the new BTX form factor. It's realigned all the pci slots and RAM slots are away from the PCI-X slots. No more AGP. it will have at least one 16x PCI slot.(that equates to a theroetical 8 gig stream.) BUT THE MOST IMPORTANT FACTOR in these form factors are the SYSTEM BUS speeds. variable speeds to achieve 2:1 Cpu to RAM bus. ex. the New Apple G5's have 1.25 ghz Front Side Bus for a 2.5 Ghz cpu., compare that with a 3.4 Ghz AMD on a 800mhz FSB. The New BTX form factors will allow such speeds for the front side bus. get it? Posted by: geo3tech but we don't know when the btx form is gonna come out.. i'm planning of buying a new computer like this month. does btx form have to have a different style case compared to the regulars? Posted by: Icedragon can someone tell me more about this BTX form factor? Posted by: compy yes, i'm interested to. also is a 800mhz fsb the higest on a mobo? Posted by: geo3tech okay i'll somewhat explain the btx form.. i got it from a magazine lol BTX: Balanced Technology Extened because of the massive amount of heate generated by today's pc they had to find a solution other then the atx specs. the biggest differences between a BTX and an ATX motherboard is its layout. For instance, whereas the CPU socket on an ATX board is positioned towards the rear of the case, BTX places the CPU socket at the front of the case, right next to an intake fan. This allows the CPU to get cool air before any other component in the system. The CPU will also be enshrouded by a "thermal module" which directs air from the intake to other parts of the system When the first BTX motherboards materialize in mid-2004, they will be available in three different sizes: picoBTX, microBTX, and normal BTX (in order of increasing size). The first two are intended for smaller computers, while normal BTX is aimed at system roughly the size of today's ATD mid-towers. Note that the ATX and BTX standards are completely incompatible with each other, with the exception of power supplies (an ATX power supply should work with a BTX motherboard, but we'll have to wait for hardware to arrive in order to know for sure). there's a picture with it but i can't get it from anywhere. I hope this helps. Posted by: Icedragon ah yes, thank you Posted by: Claw Nice info on that BTX, interesting :) Posted by: compy cool, i think i'll be waiting just a bit long until i build my pc. i'm gonna wait till that comes out and tests have been done. Posted by: Icedragon yea but dont we have to wait for all the hardware to come out for the BTX boards? Im stickin with ATX for a while yet until its tested like compy said.
