11-23-2009: Sorry for the inconvenience. We finally upgraded to vBulletin 3 !! See you there, Larry ATI X800XT drivers..problems?Go to the Tech-Forums Discussion Home PagePosted by: {FBI}The_WONDER i just bought a ATI radeon X800XT and installed it in my computer after a fresh install of windows xp pro. installed the drivers and when i get into a game (call of duty, farcry, joint operations...ect.) i can play for 2 minutes, 1 map or 1 hour and all of a sudden my computer will freeze. it locks up and the only thing i can do is hit the reset button and reboot my computer. sometimes my monitor will go into sleep mode and shut down before i restart the computer. it happens randomly and never at the same amount of time or certain place in a game. i can surf the web and do everything else except play my games. i loaded the drivers on the disk that came with the card (ati catalyst 4.5) and even tried the newer 4.6 with the same result. i have all the up to date windows patches and updates. once or twice a smartgart window poped up and said it reset my display drivers because my display device was no longer responding to them. so i know its some sort of driver problem my computer specs: alienware area 51 extreme w/ windows xp pro p-4 3.4 ghz with h/t 1 gig (256x4) samsung pc1066 rambus asus p4t533-c mobo audigy 2 zx sound card 650 watt alienware power supply ati radeon X800XT 256mb video card running the catalyst 4.6 drivers can anybody help me out? or have any ideas why its doing this? 3000.00 for a computer and 600.00 for a vid card and i cant even play my games!!!!!!!!!! Posted by: GameGURU Im not sure...it might be overheating, or it might be a driver problem. Got to www.ati.com and get the latest drivers from the site. What is the make of the card? Posted by: {FBI}The_WONDER www.ati.com is a joke. its a ati radeon card, not a off brand version. i havent have much faith in off brand makers. i registered the card with ati and went to their tech support. all i get back is a general email with faq questions. i cant get any actual human to email me any help. their tech support is a joke. im running the newest drivers from ati (4.6) and have even tried the earlier versions 4.5 and 4.4 with no luck. any more ideas? Posted by: zerozero It does sound as an overheating problem. Do you have an utility to check your temp? If not, check them during reboot in BIOS. You may try and leave the cover open for one session and see if the additional airflow will correct this snag. Alienware provide good quality product but tend to overclock their system to the max so I would check that out. Did you overclock your card? stock cooling on ATI cards usually suck. Did you knock something loose during the installation? Check your settings and tone them down if they have been overclocked. Although you have a very large PS, it may be starting to go on you. Disconnect a few unncecessary things for one session and try it again. Posted by: {FBI}The_WONDER well, almost a week, and all i can get is a measly 40 people to even look here. guess i will have to find another website that people are a tad more interested in helping. later guys/gals Posted by: Larry FBI.... Freeze!!! :) note, you posted the message in the wrong forum... I moved it to the "hardware zone" maybe you will have better luck?? As for people helping.... MANY, MANY people on Tech-Forums help Posted by: WQ87 It's probably heating problems. Many forums i been to and people will complain on how hot the card gets. Do you know what the Overdrive says for your temperature? Posted by: {FBI}The_WONDER when i back out of a game like farcry or joint opps, i never see the overdrive temp over 50 degrees c. i tried the overdrive on and off and still the same. would the heat cause my computer to lock up? it will just lock up, turn the monitor to power save mode and i cant get the dang thing to do anything. i just have to hit the reset button and reboot the computer. when it does not freeze, smartgart says that it had to reset my display device because it was no longer responding to the display drivers. i have the temp meter on the overdrive, but i also have a coolmaster cooldrive 4 w/temp meter on the card. i never see that temp over about 50-55 c. so i dont know what the problem is???? Posted by: xxdryicexx my card runs at around 60 celcius on heavy load with no problems.. do you have HT enabled in bios? Posted by: -=B$=- hahaha i never hear this kinda stuff about NVIDIA cardz lol Posted by: xxdryicexx actually, its probbaly not his card.. its the fact that he might have his HT on in bios, which messes up the comp when under heavy load. keep your comments to yourself unless you know what your talking about. a nvidia card burnt out on me after 4 months of use without any overclocking and a good fan/heatsink.. explain that, genius. Posted by: zerozero What brand of video card did you have before the X800? if NVIDIA, you may still have some files present which conflict with ATI. Get something like DETONATOR DESTROYER to completely remove them. Did you download the latest drivers from ATI? What about your control panel config. Did you check that out? Besides the x800 is a awesome card so it isnt going to be a problem with the card. Posted by: Cappy Well i dont have the card yet .So all i can offer is some things to check.I would run memtest overnight. To eliminate and possible causes there. Are you running your memory on Turbo? Just curious ,I have the same exact setup :)(RAMBUS ROCKS ) .I would leave a slot open under the AGP card,i prefer 2 ,to help the heat escape.ATI`s run hot.Try disabling FastWrites in the ATI Control Panel. In your bios are you runing UC or USWC Cacheable or Uncacheable video?Id recomend USWC but test it anyway. I run my ATI 9800 Pro at 1.5volts in bios setting.Check the recomendations for the card.ASUS default setting is 1.6 . What kind of Bench Scores are you getting? I like using 3Dmark 01se .My ATI card would freeze on the nature seen do to heat .Open slots under the AGP and leaving the rear tabs out remedied that . Posted by: xxdryicexx "Dont go ripping on Nvidia because YOUR card broke. You are right though it is a pc problem and not the cards problem. I was simply trying to make a point that no one, either it be a person or a company, are perfect.. by saying my nividia card burnt out IS in fact nvidia's fault because it was a poorly manufactured chip, but thats not the point.. point is im sure people had the same problem with ati chips, therefor goign around saying "I've never heard these problems from nvidia users" is naive to say. Have a great day.
No, your wrong. It was your manufatuer's fault. nVidia only supply the chips, while they heavily rely on OEMs to produce the boards. OEMs never get a good reputation, so they try to hide it by bundling stuff to cover up whatever could lead to future problems with the whole card itself. Bad board design with possibility of being short circuited could mean a huge difference in performance and could be the fuel to your hardware problems. Posted by: xxdryicexx Back when the ti's just came out (I had a ti4400) nividia manfactured alot of their chips, therefor its nvidias fault :) Posted by: GameGURU the Ti's were great cards, the best at the time. It also is more the fault of the company that is making the cards (not the chips). Say Visiontek, eVGA, PNY etc...but it think we got off on the wrong topic here. Posted by: Cappy Running your memory in turbo will yield a small performance increase of 5-10 % depending on your overall case temps. Look in your MOBO Manual Page 63 will explain Video Memory Cache Mode.If you have a Lazer Temp reader see what the temps are on variuos parts of the card .While your running a BenchMark. Also i forgot a major question what Bios version are you running? Posted by: {FBI}The_WONDER ok, hope this helps. if you need different info, just let me know http://img78.photobucket.com/albums/v298/ereagan2180/biosinfo.jpg EDITED by larry... sorry, the image was making the screen to wide :) click on the link to view the screen shot Posted by: xxdryicexx in the bios, the HT should be displayed as: "HyperThreading Technology : Enabled" put it on disabled.. it should be in one of the 2-3 selections... I think in advance bios settings.. im not sure thuogh, as we have different bios's. Posted by: GameGURU nice pc man sheesh Posted by: Cappy Im running revision 1010 , this may be of some help to you.Seems i remebered having a video issue on my board as well. Flashing the Bios is a good idea more so with the killer card that you have.I would install the most up to date if it were me.You can allways flash back if need be.ASUS does it good :) . Posted by: {FBI}The_WONDER ok i have a guy in my clan thats running 1012 beta, he says its working great for him... would that be a good choice? if not i could just run the 1010 like you said. thanks again for all the help!!!!!! Posted by: Cappy thats a beta id stick with the released but you can read up on what issues there addressing with the beta .Imformation is good for ya :).How did your memory check out ? Posted by: {FBI}The_WONDER ok, thought i would stick with the 1010 like you said. it seems to be doing a ok job. no problems with medal of honor and joint operations, but cod is still being a pain. a few of the stock maps run fine, but alot of the custom maps than ran fine on this computer before are still causing problems. when i join a game running those custom maps, i can play for maybe 10 or 15 seconds, then the screen will freeze for about 5 seconds, then my screen will go black and then it comes back but its all messed up. its kinda hard to describe. its just really messed up looking. my computer is froze, and i cant exit or anything. i cant even do a ctrl+alt+delete or anything. i just have to hit the reset button and reboot my computer. if i just sit there, the monitor will go into sleep mode and nothing works, no sound or anything. im wondering if this is still the video card, or a problem with cod? and i didnt get the memory thing that you said. you asked me "How did your memory check out ?" what where you talking about? something for me to check? if so, could you explain a little better for a noob that didnt understand, lol thanks for the help!!!!! Posted by: Cappy Memtest .Download it read the instructions and create a bootable floppy disc .Let the test run overnight if you can . If you have errors this may be the source of your problem.Which may require replacing 1-2 modules. Its allways best to check your main system hardware whenever you have problems.Do you have the latest Patches for the game ? There may be some files within the game folders that need tweaking.Battlezone is a good example of 1.There was a large asset file that had to be installed , then edit the render file in order to get your windows system screen resolution in sink with the ingame resolution. Its allways best to run your game the same as your windows settings example: 1024x768x32 for your desktop .In game control panel 1024x768x32 as well. Instability can sometimes be a hastle tracking down , so take your time and write down what steps you have done . Make notes of how well or worse the change made.Have you updated your Intel Chipset? Or Application Excellerators? These items can be downloaded .In the US/ASUS Posted by: {FBI}The_WONDER ok guys, tried everything and still have problems. i did everything mentioned in this thread and nothing helped. i even tried running drivers made for the x800 series of cards. im only having this problem with call of duty. medal of honor, farcry, joint operations and every other game runs fine. its just call of duty. i ran memtest and it showed no problems. uninstalled the game then reinstalled it. updated drivers for vid card, sound card, mobo, all windows updates and nothing worked. im 100% out of options other than buying a new card. IS THERE ANYBODY OUT THERE HAVING THESE SAME PROBLEMS? if so, please let me know. i would like to find out if its just me, or are others having this same problem!!!!! Posted by: Kangaroo You paid Alienware loads of money, they should god **** help! Posted by: {FBI}The_WONDER i guess if i had 1.00 for everytime i screamed that into the phone at one of their tech support people. i could retire right now. they claim that if its not their components, they cant help. if it was the factory card that came with the computer, they could. Posted by: GameGURU that is probobly true though... Posted by: Cappy well the only thing i can recomend now is send the card back or put the card in another system see if it does any better . If you want i can send you my 9800 Pro or my FX5950 Ultra you send the x800xt to me ill test yours and you can test mine in your system. All i can say is ive had the 9700 pro ,the AIW 9700 pro , 9800 pro 9800 xt. The only issues were heat problems. The Pre 9700 pro did have some conflics with the E7205 chipset but was fixed with a bios update and ATI did some work on there video drivers. So both mobo and vc makers had there probs on 1st release. I went through the same headaches you are now. Posted by: Sprooty Catalyst 4.7 is out or u can try www.omegacorner.com great drivers Posted by: eltoro0 I have the exact same problem to the littlest detail. System works fine, breaks in Far Cry, Call of Duty and Neverwinter Nights - Hordes of the Underdark. Board runs very hot. No errors in memory, etc. All the latest patches, freshest drivers etc. Still breaks. The card is a VisionTek Xtasy X800XT. The box is a generic watercooled PC with AMD64 3200+ with 1 GB of Corsait DR400 RAM. So far the only solution I found was to return the card to the store. I purchased the waterblock for the GPU, I will post more info when it arrives. Posted by: Ghostly {FBI}The_Wonder you are not the only one experiencing this problem. Im running asus A7n8X 2100+ 1G 2700 RAM 40G hard drive Powercolor x800 pro 256mb RAM 48X CD-ROM/CD-RW onboard sound 350W PSU While playing games I can play for 2 hours no problem and have it freeze and then play for 5 min and have it freeze. I have updated the catalyst drivers from 4.5 to 4.6 with no results. I also updated all my motherbourd drivers with no results. Heat is not an issue either. I have not updated my bios though and hence am probably only running 1004. My fathers computer 300W PSU MSI micro ATX (havn't checked model) 512mb 2700 RAM 40G Hard Drive Powercolor ati x800 pro 256mb RAM 48X CD-ROM/CD-RW don't know which sound card, but a cheap one Is experiencing no problems at all. He can run all the latest games with no problem. I have tried swapping the cards (as they are the same) but there have been no results I prevously owned a ASUS Geforce4 MX440 8x with the latest detonator drivers. I swapped cards and installed the ati catalyst drivers but after experiencing random freezing I formatted, changed partition from FAT 32 to NTFS, flashed the BIOS and tryed again. To no result. I once received an error message stating that my graphics card was not interacting with my display drivers and hence the VPU reset my graphics card. The freezing has become more consistant too. Posted by: Ghostly FBI something or rather I changed my motherboard to the Gigabyte 7N400Pro 2 and the freezing has apparently stopped. I am still in thprocess of testing it out on all my games but I think it sould be fine. I think what the problem is that the GPU on the X800 is conflicted with the ASUS chip on my motherboard. This was found thanks to ELV1S (a friend of mine). Looks like your up for a new motherboard buddy. Posted by: OIDanTheManIO dude, alienware is soooo kewl, i wish i had an alienware computer! Posted by: j4cKal^ the same kind of problem happened to me on my measly nvidia fx5200. My computer would crash everytime i got into a game. To fix the problem i wiped my harddrive and started over and installed the latest drivers from nvidia. Now my graphics card works like a dream. Posted by: j4cKal^ otherwise if you dont want to format your harddrive you can delete the drivers for your vcard and make sure there are no drivers from your previous card. And then try installing your ati drivers. Posted by: Perditionchi1d try cutting back on hardware acceleration. and yea, memtest, open the case, disable ht, all that stuff. Posted by: Pokey What driver is your monitor using? If it's using the Windows Plug and Play driver, try installing the actual driver for your monitor. The fact that the monitor will randomly go into stanby points possibly to the display driver for the monitor and not the video card drivers. Posted by: ngowdar ahh! Thank god, someone is having the same problem as me! I just bought a Dell Dimension 8400: Pentium 4 3.4 Ghz 1GB RAM 2 x 160GB RAID 0 (320GB) ati radeon x800xt. I was so excited when i set it up, i immediately installed farcry and splintercell PT. So imagine my huge disappointment when this problem struck. I get about 5-6 mins into the first level of Farcry, when the game freezes, the speakers make a strange clicking noise, and then the monitor will turn off like its on sleep. Like you said, the only option to get out of it was to reboot. I, too, have downloaded the patches for the games and the drivers for my card. Still same problem. Thing is, this is from a trusted manufacturer!!! It should work! I thought originally it was a FarCry problem, so I went to the FarCry help forums, and it said simply: "This is a problem with ATI users, there is no known solution yet". So I installed Splinter Cell - SAME PROBLEM!!! What the **** i bought a brand new PC with one of the best cards on the market, and it cant play a **** game!!! Posted by: Pokey I "had" a Dell Gen3 system. I messed with it for a couple weeks, but never had any luck. Swapped out driver files for various devices, reimaged, etc. and nothing worked. I finally broke down and called tech support, but they didn't have any ideas as to what else to try. If I had kept it longer, I probably would have reimaged to maybe XP Pro or 2k. Ultimately I wanted to return it and get a refund before I got stuck with it. Maybe once they get enough people calling in with the probelm, they'll find a fix and get it added to their database. If you want to try the reimage, you can see if Dell tech support will send you one. Good luck Posted by: Ben I have the same problem with a geforce 5600 please help us some1! Posted by: jblaze725 i would try your card in someone elses pc and see how well it works there. if the problems persist then its probably the card, if that fixes it its either something else on your pc causing the problem or a device conflict in which you would have to uninstall components until everything worked fine to figure out which piece was the culprit. also dont forget that that card is still very new and you can expect maybe a few bugs to be worked out during its first stages but in the end you once everythings cleared up you will have the best graphics card out. Posted by: < silent > okay here's the deal. i installed Far Cry a few months back and played it with zero errors/problems - nothing, it worked just fine. Recently i re-installed my OS and all my programs/games. When i re-installed Far Cry everything seemed to be fine, but when i run the game it freezes at the exact same point every single time. It is right at the beginning of the game, first level, after you get the pistol and take the body armor, you exit through the door and **boom** i get this high pitched, horrible noise through my speakers, then the game completely locks up my machine, the only way out of it is to press the reset button on my desktop. I did save my profiles and what not before i wiped my HDD, and when i play from those points, there is no problem at all, just at the beginning. So i uninstalled the game once again and this time accidently erased my profiles/saved games. So now i'm stuck with a wicked a*s game that i cannot play from the beggining. I have downloaded and installed patches, nothing. The only difference in my desktop is the addition of a new sound card (i was running crappy onboard before), i added the Audigy 2 NX (external running on USB 2.0) about a month ago (prior to re-installed the OS). I can play all my other games just fine, BF1942, Splinter Cell PT, Joint operations: typhoon rising, everything with no problems whatsoever, but i love FC and i can't play it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Anyways, i have downloaded the newest drivers for the Audigy and my Vid card with no success, any help would be greatly appreciated. Here are my specs. Asus P4P-800 Deluxe Mainboard P4 3.0 Ghz (HT), running at 3.6 Ghz 1 GB of Kingston PC3200 RAM (running dual channel) (2 X 512) Asus Radeon 9600XT Soundblaster Audigy 2 NX (external) Asus CD-ROM LG DVD+RW 8X Drive Seagate Barricuda - Serial ATA - 80 GB HDD Thermaltake Aquarius II liquid cooling system That's about it. Thanks again ppl. < Silent > Posted by: j-imBotron Okay, I have the EXACT 100% SAME problem as you guys. I have tried updating BIOS to the latest one, DirectX to the latest one, VIA 4 in 1 drivers to the latest one, Video card drivers to the latest one, unplugged and replugged card back in, vacuumed the whole computer, reformatted and it still doesn't work. Everytime I play Counter-Strike after a good 10-20 minutes, everything would lag for 1-3 seconds then the screen would freeze and I would hear the last sound heard playing over and over again then the screen turns black and monitor goes into power-saving mode. Then I have to restart then I get an error with my Display Driver. I contacted ASUS, but they didn't really help me. I have ASUS A7V333 mobo and ASUS GeForce 4 Ti 4400 (v8440) gfx. If anyone finds out how to fix this problem please let me know at newjerseydevils30@hotmail.com because I and a whole bunch of others have this problem too. Thanks! Posted by: zeta AMD64 3200+ Asus K8V SE X800 Pro Audigy 2 Win2k I have the same problem. I didn't do any hardware changes to my system and then suddently the problems started. 5-20 mins of playing and computer freezes, black screen, etc. Now here's some news: Rome: TW used to freeze in 3-5 mins, but when I took off my Audigy 2 and switched using motherboards audio card, I can now play RTW for 1-10 hours without freezes! Also with WW2Online I used to get the freeze often (10 mins - 2 hours), but I have only got one in about 30 hours playtime since removing Audigy 2. Some progress, but something is still wrong. Could this give you some pointers where the problem might lay? (I personaly blame DirectX 9.0c as besides display drivers, that's the only thing I have changed in my system before my problems started: My system used to work fine for about six months!) I have run Memtest86 for hours, used AtiTool to speed up the cooler fan incase this would be overheating (I'm not overlocking), checked my CPU temperatures, tryed fast write off, tryed AGP 4x, tryed whit just one memory block, multiple display drivers (Omegas too), updated motherboard chipset drivers, updated bios, checked my power source, tryed fiddling with IRQ:s (with no luck, I still have every device using IRQ 11), checked my motherboard for broken capacitors, and what not.... Getting desperate here. :) Posted by: zeta Ups... I googled this thread and seems the last post was a bit old. Well... have you figured anything out meantime?-) Posted by: Cremated Ive got the same problem Dimension 8400 x 800 xt 2gb ram 820 gb hd sound blaster 2 etc... and it was okay enoug pc, the hard drives kept on messing up on me so i just got a new one and put it in and then i had no problems, proceded to format the 500gb hard drive and install everything onto that, and installed counterstrike: source and went to play and it was grand for a while and i went to get the drivers from ati.com and the ones i used before for so long werent there the older ones to the one's they have now, not the 34.7 mb's that are on there now and i thought it was the drivers because it was fine until then so i looked everywhere for other drivers and it simply isnt worth playing counterstrike source with 20fps with these old drivers, and i did't stick around to see if the game was going freeze up on me, *********does anyone know what is happening with these ati drivers or is it down to my dell motherboard or something?********* because i ran stress tests on the memory and other diagnostics on my system dell gave me and other programs, and its all 100% so it says??? apart from my pc being very hot inside, but it always was when playing counterstrike source or battlefield 2 for hours.... colmgolem@hotmail.com is my email and msn if you can try help me out please!!! thanks Posted by: Mr. Switch Well, judging from the overwhelmingly consistent replies and statements made from people with X800’s, it’s obviously the card. As for the folks with 5200’s: reformat. That will most likely fix your issues. Those of you with X800’s though, i'd say return the card and get some sort of a 6800 or 7800. or if you ABSOLUTLY must go with ATI, than an X1800XL since the XT's are almost non-existent.
