Now I know sony's plannin to release one eventaually, so all you hackers out there should beat em to it, and I know you can, i got into an argument with an XBOX fanboy braggin how much better xbox was because of the mods ta the hard drive and all the apps for it, and it is pretty incredible what the machine can do, but I know PS2 can do better, show me how fellas, show me how.

does it really matter??

i mean..both consoles have their ups and downs. I'm pretty that with the hard drive both ps2 and xbox are capable of doing the same things.

There is a harddrive you can get already for PS2 but you will have to know a little about linux to utilize it. and granted you can do just about all the things you can for xbox but its not so easy to do. Besisdes even with that stuff in your PS2 the Xbox is still more powerful.

In japan I think there's going to be a HD/modem combo that's being released like in June or July.

i've recently been accepted by the FFXI beta test program, and their sendin me a free 40 gig hard drive, so official hard drive compatiability i'm sure is just around the corner.

Posted by: -[HARDCORE]-

don't you have to give back the hard drive when beta testing is over?

Posted by: zakaos

ya but they give me a free one for participating

as in PSX he means the new sony console that is supposed to be released next year. this is not the ps3. think of it more as a ps 2.5 ok? all the features he talked about were correct...

as far as mods both systems take it max, i saw a xbox online at some modders site that had a new faster processor, he uppd the harddrive 3x size, added divx playing, win media, all this other junk, it was nice, ps2 has the same mod capabilities.. if sony wouldn't have rushed their system out for the holidays it would be a lot better..

The HDD for use with PS2 games was released in Japan in July of 2001 or so. I imported one last year to play FFXI and I have a few other imports that support the HDD. I made a guide for the software that comes with it that replaces the Browser. Here it is:

http://www.sscorpio.com/~bungiefan/

I really need to update it to cover the additions that were made with version 0.30, but I've been busy with work and Japanese classes to take more screenshots and write more of the guide.

The one thing keeping you from using your own hard drive with the PS2 is that Sony customizes the BIOS of their HDD units and their HDD software looks for that customization. So far, I've seen Maxtor DiamondMaxes, IBM DeskStars, and Maxtor Fireball 3s used as Sony HDD units that other importers obtained. I've also heard rumor that some peoples' HDDs are Seagates. Mine is a Maxtor DiamondMax.

Sony uses 40 gigabyte, 5400 RPM, IDE hard drives as their HDD units. Linux doesn't look for the custom BIOS, but games do. So with a Linux Kit you can swap in your own hard drive, but with PSBBN or the HDD utility disc, you have to use an official HDD until someone figures out how to patch the BIOS on a store-bought hard drive to match Sony's custom BIOS.

lol bungiefan, you always beat me to the HDD replying!! :P
i have one of those Quantum fireballs that bungie mensioned...
don't get one if you don't have a japanese ps2, believe me, i paid $235 for mine, and it wont work in my asian ps2 because sony put protection on it and it can't be cracked, so i can't boot the hdd upgrades, but mearly speed up loading times...

PSX is the next sony gaming console....it is also known as PS2.5. After that, the PS3 will come out.
