11-26-2009: Sorry for the inconvenience. We finally upgraded to vBulletin 3 !! See you there, Larry Sony Plans Big for PSPGo to the Tech-Forums Discussion Home PagePosted by: May 19, 2003 - In an interview with Japan's Mainichi Shimbun, Sony reps made a few additional comments regarding the company's upcoming PSP portable gaming system. Here's a sampling of the interview dealing specifically with the PSP: "SCE plans to release the PSP (Play Station Portable) in Fall of 2004. Sony is in development with an exclusive, new optical disk medium called UMD (diameter 6 centimeters) for software storage. The device will be able to play movies and music, and is being designed for wireless network connectivity. We plan to ship around Ten million units within the first year, so the portable market will most certainly become a new battlefield for us. Nintendo will not be able to sit by idly." Whew! Ten million sounds like an awful lot of units to us, suggesting that pricing will be friendlier than what many were initially expecting having heard the big feature list for the product. As for network connectivity, Sony seems to stop short of flat-out stating "internet" connectivity. We presume that, with the device's small screen, any form of internet connectivity would be similar to cell phone internet access that's readily available through no less than three different standards in Japan. Of course, all this is speculation on our part as Sony has yet to reveal specific details on the system. 2004 can't come soon enough! Stay tuned for all the info we can scrounge up on Sony's new portable platform. Source: IGN.Com Posted by: MXer#29 New info i think not i have here a bunch of info i have gathered. Today cites some illuminating comments by Sony Computer Entertainment Europe head Chris Deering which point towards Sony's pricing and marketing plans for the upcoming portable PlayStation. Deering proposed a remarkably broad range of pricing, At the top end, games on the system's new Universal Media Disc might cost as much as 60 euros (close to $70) in Europe. However, that seems to be the high end of things. "Probably the mass of games given the time slots these will be played in will be more the $20 range, 20-30 euros," Deering said. He also clearly indicated that the UMD will be used to package more than just games. Music and video UMDs are also in the works, with pricing comparable to current DVD and CD releases. Sony's plans for the PSP handheld are necessarily somewhat vague at this point, since the system is not slated to debut until the second half of 2004 at the earliest, but that's a pretty broad range regardless. We'll doubtless hear more precise figures as the development of the system and its medium continues. So far, no games have been announced for the system. Sony is calling the PSP the "Walkman of the 21st Century." Posted by: Lostman Walkman of the 21's Century? I think not. The Ipod would fill those shoes. I think this will have tough competition with the likes of the Ngage and other phone/game units.
