11-9-2009: Sorry for the inconvenience. We finally upgraded to vBulletin 3 !! See you there, Larry Windows:DOS command terminal:: Redhat Linux:___?___command terminalGo to the Tech-Forums Discussion Home PagePosted by: piggysmile If Windows uses DOS to perform command line operations then what does Linux use? Posted by: HoLoCroN
Originally posted by Oberjaeger Comparing dos or the various dos boxes to a *nix shell is like comparing a pointy stick a main battle tank. You can kill a rabbit with both, but it's easier with the shell/tank. Then again, it's also easier to break stuff you don't want to ;)
Cool analogy, simple yet effective! (And soooo true) Posted by: piggysmile I'm a Linux beginner and i'm not yet on those shell thingy.I dont even know how to access that. All I know is that whenever I right-click the mouse, I choose new terminal and that's it. I'm using Redhat Linux 9. I'm not just so sure and I also want to learn command line processing in Linux. Posted by: Kram Lucky ******* i had to figure out how to edit my lilo.conf through the shell before i could get internet (on XP Dual boot) then i finally figured out the **** cmd startx (slackware 9.1) now i have a desktop and feel strangely less at home Posted by: horndude Learn how to use the command line really well and a GUI just gets in the way for alot of stuff.........amazing power in just a few keystrokes. Most common shell in use is BASH or bourne again shell.Do a web search and find out more.DOS has what like 30-40 commands plus options?A linux or unix shell has way more and you can program in it as well as access all the little modular prgrams linux has available. Posted by: waynehad Well, the command line is sexy and all but for a beginner you mght want to use the the GUI and a terminal emulator. Posted by: winblowz yeah... there are lots of shells for linux.... the best ( my favorite) is the bash shell it makes dos look like **** lol Posted by: winblowz i'm w/ ya horn dude. i'm with cmd line al da way! Much faster... and instead of just pressing buttons and hoping it's doing what it says it is like in windoze... LOL Al Posted by: shan 2 words: tab completion I'm a lazy ***, so when i'm switching directories or installing using ./configure make bla bla i like being able to switch thru directories and stuff like that quickly, so there piggy, when you've loaded up a terminal you can just start typing something, and if installed in your system, like ehh, ahh, ummm. gedit or mozilla you can just type in moz and then hit tab, it will complete it for you or show everything that starts with moz...sweet huh? Posted by: winblowz hehe thats cool shan Please Visit the Online Configurator, Email Hosting, Internet Marketing , Computer Schools , Software for Real Estate , AAOutlook , Search Engine Site |
