Discuss inexpensive high speed network solution?

Hey, Forum-

I am trying to set up a network in my video studio that will be suitable for sharing DV off a server. I have all the machines at gigabit ethernet, but because gigabit is uni-directional there might be a lag time in my editor's playback. Does anybody know if it's possible to use a second gigabit network to piggyback on the first? Is there a way to tell the network 'this way in, this way out'?

Does the uni-directional thing not matter at all? Obviously Gigabit has plenty of theoretical bandwidth. What can you tell me about network performance in these situations?

Thanks!

From what Ive heard, sharing video over ethernet doesnt work all too well - dropped frames and such. Though, gigabit ethernet, with its enhanced transfer protocols might just be able to pull it off. Im going to move this to the networking subforum and see what they can tell you.

You need to multi-plex the connection. That way you can have data transmitting back and forth at the same time. What is the manufacturer of your router or switch?

Thanks, g5, for getting me to the right forum. And thanks, Jonesie, for your comments. Please, tell me more!

The switch is a Netgear 5-Port Gigabit Ethernet Switch
Model: GS105
See it at:

Port 5 is a T100 connection with the DSL router, which is assigning IP addresses.
Port 4 goes to the Airport WiFi unit.
Port 3 is a Cat6 cable running Gigabit ethernet to a G4 800mhz with FW800 raided drives (the server).
Port 2 is a Cat6 cable running Gigabit ethernet to one editing machine.
Port 1 is a Cat6 cable running Gigabit ethernet to the other editing machine.

Can I run a redundant ethernet line? Should I assign specific IP addressed in that case? Can I tell OS X to use one line for incoming, one line out?

Again, thanks for all of your help. If you need any Final Cut Pro help, let me know!
