I just put a new 1394/USB 2 card into my WinXP cmptr. XP automatically did the install with no need for the install/driver CD. I took all of the defaults. I have a 3 cmptr LAN in the house, but this install created a new network connection. If I try to remove it, I lose my connection. Before the install, my network connection looked like this:

My cable internet connection still works fine, but I don't intend to ever use this 1394 device for any file sharing or anything on the my LAN...only to have an interface for my DVD camera.

What is this "network bridge" stuff and "MAC bridge miniport"?

- Why did this happen?
- Is there any benefit of this?
- Is there any risk associated with this change to my network that I should be aware of?

It all has to do with your 1394 firewire connection. You can network computers through firewire too.
If you don't want to use these....just leave them...no need to remove.

Thanks for the quick reply, Mike. I guess that means it doesn't create any sort of issue, but it seems awful brazen for the installation wizard to automatically route my internet connection to the outside through this 1394 card. (I'm assuming that is the case given if I break the bridge, the internet connection goes away.)
