Ok folks here's the deal...

I've got a 10 Gig (+ - 1 MB) that is formatted in NTFS. I know I can't go back to fat32, but I want to repartition it so that I can fit DSL( D amn-small linux - a version of Knoppix) onto it.

I've tried using the parted /mnt/hda1 line. this brings me to the prompt. Its got a lot of vague details, nothing that gives me any idea of what to do.

Now I've also got a USB external drive, but doing anything to that would be asinine, because I can't boot off of it.

Anyone have any advice? Debian commands will probably also work.. those are welcome as well

Come on now, help a new user.

Apparently NTFS is a pain in the posterior, you should probably use something like partition magic to resize before starting your install. Maybe someone who uses windows or dual-boot systems can help more.

I appreciate your answer, and that was what I was debating. I even tried the NTFSRESIZE program ,but it wasn't compiled right or something.

I guess I could copy my HDD install to the USB drive, use FDISK and take it back to fat32.. I can work from there
