Hello all,
I am having a dilly of a pickle trying to work out my home network. My client PC, a Windows 98 PC is unable to connect to the internet but can browse the main PC on the network.
My "main" PC is:
--Windows XP
--Realtek 8029 4 port switch for LAN
--3com NIC connected to cable modem for WAN
My "client" PC is:
--Windows 98
--Realtek 8029 PCI NIC
The client PC is connected to the main PC using a 50' rj45. I ran the windows XP network set-up wizard on both computers without a hitch. Both PC's can see each other in the network neighbourhood and ping back and forth without a problem.
The main PC has an IP addy of 192.168.0.1 (for the switch) and the client PC had an IP addy of 192.168.0.70 The WAN connection (3com) on my main PC is shared and is not firewalled by Windows. Currently I do have Sygate firewall on my PC, but I disabled it on msconfig for testing sake. I ran the network connection wizard on the client PC and set it to connect through the LAN to get online. No internet protocols work on the client PC (HTTP, FTP, etc) BUT I can ping external sites from the client PC (google, yahoo, msn, etc...)
Anyone have any ideas?

Do you have your gateway setup as the 192.168.0.1 address with the DNS addresses, etc.?
The network setup disk should have done this but I'd thought I'd start there. The DNS adresses should be there too or else you wouldn't be able to resolve yahoo.com, etc. But, you could be using the DNS thruogh the 198.168.0.1 PC for pinging...
You may want to try and register the dns through the command prompt.

Howdy,
The DNS is set to "use the following DNS server" but the fields are blank. Currently no gateways are installed.
How do I register the DNS through the DOS? Also, on the win98 box, should I set the default gateway as 192.168.0.1?

shouldn't it be set to "obtain DNS server automatically? if you have a linksys router try using 192.168.1.1 as the DNS server after you try automatic.

On the client 98 PC, you will need to fill in the DNS addresses, IP address, mask and gateway. To obtain the DNS addresses, you must either call your ISP and ask them which ones you need to use or goto your XP machine and click start > run > type "cmd". At the prompt, type "ipconfig /all" The addresses you need to use will be here.
On the 98 machine, the gateway will need to be the address of the XP machine (192.168.0.1). After this has been setup, on the 98 machine, goto the command prompt and type "ipconfig /registerdns". You can then exit and you should be able to access the net. You will have to reboot the 98 machine.
Let us know how this turns out.

Howdy,
Tried your suggestions mikesgroovin, sorry to say it didn't work either. All the network settings went in fine, but the /registerdns wasn't a valid switch for ipconfig. The only switches I have are all, batch, renew, release, etc...
I tried running the XP network set-up wizard on the 98 box again. I could connect to the web for one windows session than after a reboot it was back to the same old issue. I bet it's just an issue with windows, I am reinstalling now and if that doesn't work, I'll likely just buy some more RAM and through XP on 'er.
Thanks for all your help!

if this person does have dns problems but can connect to the wan, then they should be able to ping number ip addresses.
this should be your setup. when you get to the end of the pg, id say try to setup automatically. If it doesn't work, go manual.
