Can you file share with cat 5 cable and a nic card in each PC, using windows XP?
No router, hub, etc. Only 2 nic cards? Can that be done?
If so, can you give information on how to do it?
:)
Thanks
PS. personally, I thought it can't be done, but my neighbor says he has done it before???

Use a crossover cable to connect them, voila.

Yep, all you have to do is make a crossover cable.
Here is what you will need:
A length of Cat5 (as many feet or meters as you need)
2 RJ45 connectors
Crimpers
To make a crossover cable here is what you do:
1. On one end of the cable, cut the insulation around the 4 twisted pairs inside. Untwist the four pairs into 'single' wires. (Do not cut the insulation around the individual wires)
2. Put the color wires in this lateral [from left to right] order:
Green/White
Green
Orange/White
Blue
Blue/White
Orange
Brown/White
Brown
Place them carfully into the RJ45 connector, clip side down, and use the crimping tool. (It's best to crimp just alittle of the insulation into the RJ45 because it will reduce the tension on individual wires.)
3. Now your ready for the other end. Clear the insulation from the 4 individual wires and untwist the pairs. Place them laterally [from left to right] in this order:
Orange/White
Orange
Green/White
Blue
Blue/White
Green
Brown/White
Brown
Place them carfully into the RJ45 connector, clip side down, and use the crimping tool. (It's best to crimp just alittle of the insulation into the RJ45 because it will reduce the tension on individual wires.)
And that's how to make a crossover cable. I wrote that from memory so someone should double check me.

i think thats too much for someone new to networking. it is easier to go to best buy or circuit city and buy a pre-made crossover cable. i would only make a cable if you need an exact size, those cables require surgical precision to get the wires in order :)

You have to learn somewhere... I sure as **** don't want to give my money to a store for something that is easily made. Right?

too true, I buy cable by the Miles :P

I love making cable! Its fun.

WOW... should have post the question LONG time ago :)
I hate paying for a cable that is simple, but I did not know how to do :)
the generic cable is like few bucks.
You go to retail store and the "crossover" cable is like 15 bucks.

Glad I could help.

Yea, I agree. Just buy the regular cable, crimper and a tiny bag of RJ-45 ends. It's always a joy learning new things.
