Does DSL operate over a standard phone line connection?
Just had modem delivered and second line for it connected....
supposedly. Entered all information for new LAN setup , with
Cavalier , but in Netw. properties , message continues to say
"Unplugged cable...." CavTel claims Verizon did not wire 2nd
line right. Just wondered if I could at least try the DSL by
plugging into standard telephone line?

There has to be a DSL modem between you and the phone line running to the ISP. If they did something wrong, then you will have to wait for them to fix it.
You can try to attach to another phone line and see if you can get attached. is the Line they installed a 2nd phone line, or just another connection to the main box?

Sorry , thought DSL modem was a given. I'm certain it's a
second dedicated line , otherwise why not just use a splitter
in office where computer is ? I also saw an access fee on
first bill from CavTel , which I'm not sure we should owe as never
got DSL equipment till much later. Question really only relates
to whether a second line would be any different as standard
phone line , if intended for DSL?

DSL is over a standard phoneline, sometimes they have to upgrade the line to accomodate DSL because it doesnt meet standards. testing it on another line wont work i am certain. wait for them to fix it for you.

i think they activate DSL for each specific phone line, meaning you would have to get another DSL connection for the other line since they are separate phone lines. not positive on this, but i am almost positive that my guesses are correct. . . .possibly :)

DSL works over standard fone lines, they hookup the other end. You dont need a second line for DSL... If you had the second fone line installed just for dsl, explain the error in salesmanship to the telco and get the charges reversed and the second line unhooked...
They may have the DSL hooked up on your original line..
Hook up your modem on your original line and see if it works, wont hurt anything... if it works, hook the filters that they gave you up on your phones as per their instructions or itll get disconnected everytime you use the phone...

Thanks all for replies.. No one told me that the second cable left
behind (which I had tucked away) AND which looked identical to
the one I was using....was actually wired different. !! Been
enjoying DSL for over a week now.

They dont touch your phone line. They upgrade your exchange so that it can handle the higher frequency.

You only need to upgrade your phone line if you want/need fibre optic.

i think your problem might be similar to the one i fixed yesterday. my boss had me come to his home to setup his computer. he was using a regular phone cable rj-11 to connect the cable modem to the network card instead of cat5 rj45. thanks for clearing that up OracIe

In the UK, we use RJ11 for DSL.
