Hi..
I'm new to linux OS
I want to know which linux system is a good one?
and if possible a user friendly one. Also could you tell me the reasons?
Thanks alot

red hat or mandrake would probably be the best
Red Hat
-easy to use
-lots of features
-graphical or DOS like mode

ya i still prefer redhat over any other distro, the other i would recommend is novell suse.

Keep in mind that the current version of redhat is called Fedora.

> i was referring to redhat 9.

If u have no hassles about partitioning ur drive etc.. Then it's definately Redhat / Fedora...

Otherwise .. try Knoppix .. it's totally hassle free .. just boots rite off the Cd to a totally graphical interface .. Pretty stable too ..
Definately a distribution for a Beginner

Red Hat 9 is good. From reviews I read, Fedora seems buggy. LinuxISO.org should have Red Hat 9 ISOs still. Another easy one is Mandrake and CollegeLinux.

Gentoo is a great distro to start on, although it is complicated, the directions are clear and concise, and you will learn alot more about how linux works.

Never had a problem with Fedora!

If it's your first dive into Linux I suggest Mandrake 9.2. The setup can't be easier.

Thanks for the answer guys..
I just have another question..
where do you guys get all the application software for linux???
are they free too?
thanks

if you d/l all the ISO's for your distro then you have it all. Most of it anyway. then you just check out linux sites and see what they have for your distro.

i have a cover disk from a magazine and it comes with knoppix is that a type of linux?

Posted by: belveder

I'm looking at trying something other than windows as well, there's some good suggestions here and it sounds like Redhat 9 is the most common, but what is it's compatibiliy like with Windows games & programs?

Posted by: nenn

personally i dont like rh 9 bc of the ram usage, linux is ment to be run on systems with low ram and slow processors i couldnt run it well on my laptop 600mhz pIII and 64mbs of ram where all other distros i tried worked well, id say i love slackware and im going to try out debian one of these days.

Yeah, can you use any Windows programs with Red Hat 9?

Posted by: whiteknight

You can run games using a program called WineX (transgaming.com). Not all games are supourted but you can do a search to find out if the one you want is. Also there are some games that run naturually on linux (I think their is a Doom III port...).
