Does my router slow down my internet connection? Is there any way around it other than not using it?

it shouldn't, why do you suspect it of slowing down your internet? if many other computers on your network are using a lot of bandwidth that could be your cause. you can call your ISP and ask them help you help to troubleshoot your poor performance or at least verify it is not the service.

It depends on what you are doing on the net and what kind of router you are using.
But a regular wired router will not slow down a shared-performance of the internet between several computers. It's actually the fastest shared solution...
