I'm installing Fedora Core 1 to my Compaq Presario 906US laptop.

Specs:
Athlon XP 1500 + (1.33 GHZ)
Windows XP Home (installed on it right now)
256MB of ram
32 MB Shared video ram (256-32)
20 GIG HDD.
ATI Mobility U1
DVD/CD Combo (not sure of make)

When I try to boot from the CD, everything works fine. It loads properly.

It asks a few questions, then it goes a message comes up saying that the CD-Rom (or drive, I forgot ^_^) could not be found.

I tried it on my desktop, it worked fine. It loaded everything great and it was about to install.

The problem is, I don't want Linux on my desktop computer. I want it on my laptop.

Chances are your laptop uses a non-standard cdrom driver hence when trying to install linux it cant utilise the drive after it gets into the swing of things.

Id suggest trying another distribution of linux to see whether the problem is replicated there, or alternatively try something like FreeBSD which isnt based entirely on the linux backbone.

Just out of curiousity, what features are you hoping to use linux on your laptop for?

I have tried Mandrake Linux, and it did the same exact thing as the Fedora installation. Not much difference between the two, but that tells me nothing is wrong with the burnt CD.

In a few days (hopefully), I will have a new system running dedicated to Linux. I will try FreeBSD, though.

I never used Redhat or Fedora so I was interested in trying it out. I use my laptop mainly for going on vacations, and it doesn't have anything I really need to save. I was going to install Linux on it just for fun to mess around with and learn it.

I have another idea ;).... As i ONLY use FreeBSD I can only talk from that side, but if you check out [url]http://www.freebsd.org[/url] you can download boot floppies aswell or even install from FTP off the net :D, or anonymous FTP across a network ...

Theres millions of ways to install ... hope it helps buddy :)

I tried that on Fedora. I don't think it's able to read ANYTHING on my laptop :-P

Could you copy it possibly from the desktop computer onto your laptop via a NIC card. If your laptop and desktop have one, then you could TRY that. I'm not sure, however, if linux examines all of your hardware when it installs, and builds the OS based on that.

If it examines the chipset while installing, then that isn't an option.

It doesn't matter anymore. In a week or two I will have a new computer.
