Discuss Profanity
Posted by: DMo224
I've been asked by several people about profanity here, hence, this thread.
First of all, Tech-Forums is doing some clean up. We will be starting a NO PROFANITY policy in the near future. The profanity filters have been populated and will continue to be populated. So, you will see the asterisks instead of the profanity. We're moving in that direction now.
Please do not use the following words:

****

****

**** ***

*******

*** *****
Okay, that was just a little levity.
What is profanity?
Though your common language with your friends might make just about anything acceptable, it is not acceptable here. It's really hard to define profanity except to say that it's words that are not generally acceptable in ALL conversations with all groups of people. Figure the place where you wouldn't use any profanity, and then make your replies here like it would be there.
Profanity is an ignorant person's way of being emphatic.
I'm sure that everyone here is intelligent enough to be able to choose different adjectives to be emphatic. That's what we're counting on with the membership. You can master a computer's most intricate concepts and workings, you can master the proper adjectives.
Bypassing, or trying to bypass the filters by spelling out the word except for one letter (or two) is not acceptable. If you're smart enough to do that, then you're smart enough to choose a different adjective. Type in your own asterisks if you want. Type in characters like #%@#%. Don't type in the l334 versions or non-English versions.
There might be a couple that want to play games with this decision and upcoming rules. Please don't do that and cause problems. If you really like this community, be a contributor and not a rebel.
This thread is left open for your comments and suggestions. However, it is not open to allow profanity.
Thanks for your cooperation in making Tech-Forums a better place. Please note that this is another step in preparation for TF2.

i wanna post what im thinking If i wanna post ****ing *****es, i assume its up to your word filters to star it. You decide what allowed on your forums, so i can post ****ing *****es as is w/o repercussions, correct?

Shawn's answer was a good one.
The assumption that the word filters are responsible to catch everything is NOT a good assumption. The poster is responsible for what they type. So if for some reason the profanity filter does not catch some profanity, the poster will be held responsible, with whatever repercussions are deemed necessary.

And on another note, being a member here isn't a right...it's a privelege. Whether you see it as being one or not is your problem.

Personally I think you are going Overboard here:
I recently replyed to A thead and I reccomended **** Small Linux, I came back to the thead and it was starred out I mean c'mon guys that is the name of the Distro. I was not trying to be emphatic just typing in the Name of A distro, Fair eough people using the 'F word' and other language is disgusting and should not be tollarated but the term '****'? C'mon guys I was using it in context. After all it is A Ligit Linux Distro.
Just my 2c,
Jake

Legit or not, it doesn't matter.
Filters are not intelligent, but neither are the idiots who keep making us use the filters.
Sort of a catch-22.

I want to emphasis this point:

Besdies several people making the profanity filters work, they are also trying to bypass the filter. Please do NOT continue this. Thanks for your cooperation.

Sometimes when people were trying to type the word D***, it's actually somones name.
Somone PM'd me and sweared like Lincoln because he thought i was cursing him out the northern hemisphere. lol :p
What shall we do about such things???

On the very rare occassion that the filter would take out someone's name, you could do as mentioned above and change the "i" to a "1". That would work, but don't use this as an excuse to call everyone that. :)

OK, I've gone through some of my recent posts and i've changed my choice of words in a few places. Thanks for giving me a warning in the Uwe Boll thread instead of just banning me or something.

Hmm... I've found the filter is a nice way of pointing out who has dirty language and making it clear. If you don't use language like that, you'll look like a more intelligent person anyway.

There has been some more discussion about profanity. Let me try to clear up a couple of things.
First of all, when we make rules at TF, we ask for the Forum Leaders' opinions (sometimes we ask for member's opinions). And sometimes, a rule is made by the Owners and/or Admins. Regardless of how the rules are decided upon, the Forum Leaders have the responsibility of enforcing those rules, even if they may not agree with them. So if you use profanity and a Mod edits it out or warns you about it, remember that they are doing their jobs. If you want to debate the rightness or wrongness, the strictness or laxness, the wisdom or the ignorance of it, then you'll want to contact me. However, you'll want to refer to the first post in this thread that says that this thread is open for comments and questions, not for profanity. And it is not open to change the rule.
Please note that we are going to a NO PROFANITY rule. Get in practice now and stop with the profanity. And remember, using profanity with a symbol or number substituted for a letter is also NOT acceptable.

It's been awhile since this thread was first posted and since the last post in it. Since that time, members continue to use profanity and do the things that this thread explicity says not to do.
As of now, no profanity is acceptable; as in the Zero Profanity Rule. What is acceptable is to see the **** asterisks or the #%^@ characters, not the word spelled out with a number substituting for a letter or partly spelled with other characters in it, etc. . Read the first post.
The Forum Leaders have presently been editting those posts that continue to use profanity. I think that instead of editting a post, we should delete the entire post. Maybe that's the way it should go with any post that breaks any rules, like the ones that want to play the rules on things that are off limits. So, you make a long post, break the rules, and the post disappears. It's simpler and quicker than a Mod having to come in and edit or [SNIP] out the trash. The Forum Leaders are discussing this with me now.
Thanks for your cooperation.

i am curious does this zero profanity now apply to the circumstances you mentioned earlier i.e if we are actually referring to something that is not truly a curse word e.g. the australian electronics store "Richard Smith Electronics" *name is actually an abbreviation for Richard :). i also wish the words for the opposite of heaven and the word meaning to condemn to the place opposite of heaven could be removed as they are not terribly profane in my opinion, but that is only my opinion and it is not my position to decide.

i'm a n00b so i know i'm going to get flamed for going against the grain but personally i don't think there is anything unintelligent about using curse words. sure over using curse words is unintelligent, but so is overusing any word. i think the far more unintelligent thing is our societys taboo that we put on words. the truth is using profanity often does carry more emphasis. for example the phrase "holy sh**" carrys much more ephasis and can be taken far more seriously as an expression of suprise then can most of it's "replacements" such as "holy cow". i think it is the abuse of any word that should be cracked down upon. singling out a few words does nothing to stop the ignorant from being ignorant and does rob intelligent, creative people of a few of the colors in this vast color wheel we call the english language.
/end rant

If said people are intelligent and creative, they will surely be able to find family-friendly, G-rated alternatives.
The English language has the largest (I think) vocabulary in the world, not including the words we make up on the fly. Not allowing a handful of those words that are found offensive by many ain't gonna hurt anyone.

Here's just a reminder (a bump) of this thread and that we are officially using the zero profanity policy. Some of you are ignoring the first post, and subsequent posts, in this thread about what is and what is NOT allowed as is shown by your posts and the use/misuse of profanity. Please do not continue to ignore this thread, and the rules.

but why should they have to? why do the intelligent have to tame down their thoughts just because the dull minded masses tend to missuse a few word? sure there are less shocking, less intense alternatives, but sometimes intensity is the desured effect,
Posted by: Trotter
but why should they have to?
Because the rules of the forum forbid the use of this kind of language, period.
This is not up for debate.
but sometimes intensity is the desured effect
A person can acheive intensity without vulgarity... it is simply a matter of word choices.
Again, neither this nor the rules of this forum are up for debate. the rules have been stated and clarified, so there is no excuse.

It seems that some members have chosen NOT to abide by the zero profanity and no flaming rules. That choice means that you would rather NOT be a member at Tech-Forums.
I'm asking that you carefully consider your choice in this matter, because your choice will be reflected with your membership.
This is a technology forum, filled with intelligent people, that will remain a technology forum, even though some members may not remain. We can and do help others, even have some fun in the OT forum, but some won't continue because they chose profanity and flaming.

I just had an idea...
Can you make the bad word users only be able to post *'s?
Like for example:
If someone gets warned and they still don't listen to Dmo, can you make it so when they post something anywhere, everyone can only see *'s?
I think that would be soooooper funny!
plus it would give you good pwnage points. ++
Posted by: DMo224
I like that idea, kinda' like the ol' troll ban. I don't think it can be done with this version of vB. So for now, we ban 'em and they can't even put in the asterisks.

You should change it so instead of "*" it's ""

I have to say I agree, I can't see that anyone would be offended by the occasional "to condemn to the place opposite of heaven" or "the opposite of heaven" being used in moderation.
But hey it thats the rules then fine.
Posted by: StylinGolfShoes
"to condemn to the place opposite of heaven"
what word is that
just say like the f-word or something
Posted by: Trotter
"to condemn to the place opposite of heaven"
That would be the full strength version of 'darn'.
The reason the words discussed are part of the larger list is that each person defines "moderation" differently. And then there are those who believe that moderation is something that other people should observe... but not them.
Unfortunately, due to the continued use of profanity by some, but not all, of the membership, the zero-tolerance policy has been adopted. And while not every post can be read and dealt with, those who break this rule over and over again can be, and have been, banned fropm TF.
Posted by: Tkey
Trotter you have a typo ;)
I think the rule is a good one , it only starts flaming in the long run anyway.
Posted by: Paul_Wall_117
Make it to where the censored word is not only in asterisks, but also colored in red. Just as a somewhat stronger reminder that you're screwing up.
Just a suggestion. Shouldn't be that hard, just a little html.
