You guys llike Linux, and that's cool, but do you like real unix too? Ever use any distros of BSD?

eh whats dif between linux and unix?

A few letters.

Not so Bleep.
Linux is a Unix port from a 32 bit to a 16 bit machine, or I've come to understand that anyway, made by Linus Torvalds
There's a big difference between Unix and Linux in the fact that Linux takes a lot more from Windows and the newer versions aren't based solely on the kernel, as you can go into Linux and mess with the kernel itself (unlike Windows) that's the big difference between it and windows. However, Linux isn't solely based off of the kernel (like I said) like Unix is.
on top of that I believe Linux has certain programs programmed in different languages, whereas Unix is strictly C-based.

Ahh. Well that taught me something.
I've always been curious about Linux (plus the penguin is kinda cute and cudly lookin'), but i always end up with Windows instead.
I'm still thinking of trying linux on my old computer...just to learn more.

Tux (the penguin) makes linux all that much more cooler.

Cute... LOL
In my opinion, Unix and Linux are not any more complicated than Windows. It's just been out of the end-user realm of interest for so long and now making a lot more people interested due to it's perks (flexabilty, open souce functionality, security, etc.) Think of how long it takes the average user to truely understand Windows. If a user starts out with Linux and/or Unix, without any Windows/DOS background, then it would be just as easily comprehended. A lot of people understand DOS and Windows and then try to start to understand Unix/Linux.... a lot tougher for the average end-user. You gotta take all that you understand about DOS/Windows and throw it out the window.....keeping, of course, all that you understand about general computing and how a comupter functions.

Total control. That's what it's about. You can do whatever you please as long as you have the brain power to do it.

Brain Power? I'm screwed...
Lbreakout2 is the best game ever!

I tried the BSDs and I can't stand those things. they kept asking me where the install files were located, couldn't write files to the hard disc for no reason, and wouldn't revognize most of my hardware. i call them babysitting distro (BSD).
At any rate, linux is unix just built differently. i'll note here that bsds aren't the real unix anyways, they're knock offs.

linux, imo, is the best one made but i could and most likely wrong.
(rant)people can learn linux just as they can windows. most people are more familiar with windows and think that linux is too hard. with some effort and thought, they can learn it as well.(/rant)
has anyone seen ibm's linux commercial?

linux isn't unix. it's based on unix.

you say tomatoe i say toma'toe
its *nix ain't it? even bsds are unix based.

Linux: A Brief History ... lol
Linux is an operating system that was initially created as a hobby by a young student, Linus Torvalds, at the University of Helsinki in Finland. Linus had an interest in Minix, a small UNIX system, and decided to develop a system that exceeded the Minix standards. He began his work in 1991 when he released version 0.02 and worked steadily until 1994 when version 1.0 of the Linux Kernel was released. The current full-featured version is 2.4 (released January 2001) and development continues.
Linux is developed under the GNU General Public License and its source code is freely available to everyone. This however, doesn't mean that Linux and its assorted distributions are free -- companies and developers may charge money for it as long as the source code remains available. Linux may be used for a wide variety of purposes including networking, software development, and as an end-user platform. Linux is often considered an excellent, low-cost alternative to other more expensive operating systems.
Due to the very nature of Linux's functionality and availability, it has become quite popular worldwide and a vast number of software programmers have taken Linux's source code and adapted it to meet their individual needs. At this time, there are dozens of ongoing projects for porting Linux to various hardware configurations and purposes.
Linux has an official mascot, the Linux Penguin, which was selected by Linus Torvalds to represent the image he associates with the operating system he created.
Although many variations of the word Linux exist, it is most often pronounced with a short " i " and with the first syllable stressed, as in LIH-nucks.

And I agree with Mage, it's still *nix right.

I sure am glad my thread turned into something informative. Thanks Linux gurus for your input!

Linux is what you use by choice, Windblows is what most use by default.

The current full-featured version is 2.4....minor correction, 3.3 is the version du'jour

I currently use AIX unix, I have used SCO in the past, I have configured and set up BSD (royal pain) and I have also used several different flavors of Linux. With all of that said, I prefer Linux hands down. It is easier to configure, use and there is a whole lot more available for it than Unix. BSD well it is BSD and I will just leave it at that.
Having started out on Windows back in the early 80's, I am forced to use it and with Win XP it isn't all bad. I must admit though I do have a lot more fun with Linux though.:p
