I already own a awsome computer for gaming and all my intensive tasks. For certain reasons I do not want to dual boot my main computer. For this reason I am going to build a secound computer in order to mess around with a 64-bit version of linux.
Basically I just going to use this computer for educational purposes.
1. Learn linux well
2. programming linux application in a linux enviroment
3. streamline linux
4. maybe even mess around with the linux code a bit
I trying to keep the computer as cheap as possiable and still be able to use it for what I need. I dont think I will need all that much power for this stuff.
This is what I am thinking of buying.
AMD Sempron 64 2600+ Palermo $65

Does this look like a decent setup for my tasks to everyone?

It'll work, but why not just use a CD boot disk of something like Knoppix?

Linux completly open souce correct? I would like to be able to acturally mess around with the code of the linux operation system and have a spare computer to test my modifications on. I think using something like koppix where all the data on the cd would make that difficult.

actually if you know what you doing, with a hard drive and a cd burner you can use knoppix to to make your own version of knoppix from the live cd while running it I do believe, actually you wouldnt need a hard drive, a flash drive or any storage big enough would work
but, no, you will be limited by running off a CD vs a reg hard drive install, but knoppix is good to play with for awhile too, although it doesnt always run on everything, live cd's can be finicky about hardware sometimes
