Discuss Laptop making quiet "clicking" noise

Posted by: beedubaya

Ok, I got a Sony VAIO laptop, and every once and a while, it will make a quick "clicking" noise. Its not very loud, but its just loud enough to notice it if the room is quiet. However, everything appears to be running fine on it. What could the clicking noise be? Is it something to worry about? Thanks for any replies.

That would be your harddrive. It may be a warning sign for you to do a backup frequently.

Try HD Tune it's a software that monitor the health of your HD

Also make sure the HD is not operating over the recommended temputure.

Well, i've run that program, and it seems to say everything is ok, even after doing an error scan. Its running at 37*C. Lets just hope this is nothing serious.

I won't say it's normal, it might lead to a problem later.

i thought all laptops made a clicking noise on the HDD

They do, Law is just a little paranoid...

Every laptop I have been around does a little click noise when the HD is working.

hmm, i'm not suffering from this problem on my Amilo M3438. might have something to do with my hd being S-ATA.

definitely sounds like its the hdd. its the only thing that could make a clicking noise. at least its the only thing that could make a clicking noise thats inconsistent. if it were a fan or something of the like it would be more or less constant. don't know if its anything to be worried about though. in any case keeping regular backups is never a bad idea and if it is failing it may just save you some trouble

Ive had a laptop that has made a 'clicking' noise for the past 10 years. The ******* is STILL working!!

I think your fine. Laptops tend to make weird little noises like that.

Mine did that, but it was pretty **** loud. It would scare the **** out of me whenever it did it, but nothing bad ever happened. Just ignore it and see what happens.

Mine did this too, it's a harddrive platter crash.

Mine's more of a cluck than a click... Damned loud though

A cluck would be a better way of describing mine as well. What do you mean platter crash?

Posted by: KMOTE

i didnt know that platters could crash together- is this what you mean or could it be a slider/platter crash?

personaly i would not be worried about it, mine makes all sorts of strange noises but then mine is ~ 13 years.

back-ups are always a good idea even if there is nothing seeming to be wrong

A 13 year old laptop?! That thing is older than most of the members here! What is it, a C64?

What would be a slider/platter crash?

Posted by: KMOTE

Its a compaq contura given to me by my dad i think its mar "92 although i cant check that.

in an HDD the slider is suspended above the platter and can come in contact with a platter especialy if moved while in operation.

Posted by: Him

You mean the head physically touching the plate? If that was happening constantly, he wouldnt have any secotrs left to write on!

Posted by: KMOTE

well its either that or something in the motor-fan or HDD

Head is hitting the platter at a high speed

Not all laPtops do that, only some. Apparently it is normal, although I dont like it.

For some reason, right now, I am reminded of a huge KFC I went to whilst in London that was across the street frrom Hyde Park. Dont ask me why I said that, i really dont know.
