i was able to do this before! using bootable cd. i am able to format the drive and particion, but windows has problems copying files to the hard drive...i have tried 3 different winxp pro cds, and 3 different cdroms...had better luck with very slow cdrom, but eventually crapped out when windows was finishing the setup process...any ideas. Maybe my drive is bad?

It could be the drive or the IDE controller. Obviously, check the drive 1st... or you can always use the 6 setup disks.
