It is supposed to keep your xbox from catching on fire, but I have read things that say that the power cord is not the problem, like this:

Just a quick hint to people it only applys to the first releases of the xbox, if you bought one fairly recently then theres no need to get a new power cable.

they wont let you any ways before you send it there is a required feild where you put in you xbox serial #.

I have a Xbox, got it two weeks after it was release and there is NO bad soldering jobs on the PSU in it. Sure there might be a few people who tryed to fake it to make the Xbox look bad, but im sure its a few hundred bad cables since my cable does get warm. Anyways i have no problems running my xbox with the stock cable.

Again, it is not a 'bad cable.' It is a problem with some Xbox's PSUs.

It is rare also I noticed when I tried out my original power cord that if u plug it in first then into the xbox that causes the spark so do it the other way around,when I did I did not hear the spark.

yah. i dont get any problems with my cord at all. even though i havent played it for a while but when i played it for hours at a time no problems. so, some unlucky people i guess.

microsoft are just covering there arses!!!! sure your cable or PSU might not be defected but they cant take that chance. so if you go complain that your house burnt down you might not be able to make a claim because you new about the problem just didnt act. u might aswell get it....free STUFF!! yay

Just saw this. This is the reason I quit consoles. After the redicoulous pricing when the consoles first come out and the crappy jobs of putting them together has ****ed me off. For those of you who said this is rare be warned. Its not to rare. Ive seen 4 cases. Happened to me twice, a friend and another friend.
First time I didnt get the spark on the outside becuase I was probally looking the other way. But they replaced the entire thing for only 80 bucks. Yes!!! not....
Second time I sent it and they wanted like 300$. So I was like f** that. But I still believe the second time was caused to dre's instead of me plugging the xbox in.
