Hey everyone (New to forums)

I am learning programming, something I have always wanted to do. Everyone keeps telling me im too old but screw um' :) (by the way im 18). I started learning VB 6.0 figuring this would give me a solid background in programming and would allow me to advance to better structures such as C, and then C++.

Lately I have been having some doubts about whether VB was smart to learn first. I know it is useful to learn but it doesnt seem applicable. Most people say either I should have just jumped right into C , or VB.NET. What do you guys think ? I am not looking for a career in computer game programming (although it would be nice) I just wanted to learn how code in these few months I have before I start college and majored in computer sciences. I figure the more background I have in coding before I go to school the better. Plus its just **** fUN ~

I'm loving every minute of it.

There is nothing wrong with learning VB6 first, but VB.NET would be better. Also the VB kind of language is good to learn before languages such as C++ becuase you can absorb programming basics (things such as arrays) easier.

Thanks for your response

Do you think skipping C and going right into C++ will cripple my skills or help them.

Also I figure if I learn VB first .NET would be easy to pick up later.

Skipping C will in no way cripple your skills, it would even help because you will have more time for C++. So little programs are written in C now. C lacks object obrientation which isnt a good thing.

I want to be able to code in many different language but I really want to master and spend all my time with C++

Im struggling to get through this VB book cause I so want to jump into C++ right now !!

But I am taking my time in VB and doing all the examples and everything so that I get it down because I know if I dont I will regret it later.

Does anyone know a good C++ book to buy? I already have the background in VB so it doesnt have to assume you are a complete beginner.

Although I have never worked with C++ so a book for a complete beginner is probably what I should get.

The book I got for VB was "Beginning Visual Basic 6" by Peter Wright and I liked the book alot. His approach was very interesting and I was able to absorb the information very well.
