Discuss help in buying a new laptop

Posted by: NewCents05

im deciding to buy a new laptop in the next month or so and i want a fairly big one. like a 17in screen i want to spend at most 2200
ive been looking at some and havent found anything thats really a great deal
the best 1 ive found so far is hp zd8000 which customized is 1988.00
it would be with
media center xp
3.2ghz
17.0"(1680x1050)
512mb ddr2 sdram
100gb 5400rpm
free upgrade 8xdvd +/- rw/r
256mb ati mobility radeon x600
wireless b/g and bluetooth(a must)

if anyone can help me find a laptop with equal or better specs than this that would be helpful but please keep in mind i want it to have a 17in screen

Any suggestions would be helpful otherwise i will order this laptop
thanks

What you listed sounds pretty sweet, and the price for that equipment is about right.

One thing I would suggest, is going with XP Pro instead of Media Center 2005. Even though MCE is built on XP Pro, they still strip most of the OS features out of it. There are ways around it with a little registry hacking, but that can be a hassle.

Check out some 3rd party apps for a media center to throw on top of your OS.

That is just my opinion, you can get a lot more funcionality from your laptop that way.

I would go with a Toshiba, they make good quality notebooks. Here is what i would buy with your budget.

that is pretty expensive for what it has
100gb at 4200rpm while the hp runs at 5400rpm
ati 9700 64 mb is not as good as 256mb x600
im not too fond of home edition
plus the xp as a full keyboard but that doesnt really matter too much
screen resolution is lower too

Stay away from Dell, they suck big time. IBM is another good company to look at, but i don't think they make 17 inch notebooks.

Ive been buying laptops for business and home use for a good few years.

I am not sure about previous comments here in the forum or other stories that you have posted links on.

So far I find Dell to provide the best machines, I personally run a Dell 9100 xps laptop and its amasing, I have no issues with it.. this is my 3rd dell.

Its all opinion in the end.... but the simple fact of business states that you cant be poor at your chosen field and be succesful, Dell are the biggest computer reseller in the world and they didnt get there by being poor.
