that these forums have over 900 members and only a little over a 1,000 posts. That's like each member has posted 1 time. But of course we know that not everyone has posted. It's probably liike 5% that post.

But still..how do you get 900 members that don't post?

Posted by: Chopper

Good question I often wonder the same thing. Any suggestions on how to make them post would be great.

Cheers

Free money! :D

Most of the other forums i visit / moderate, get rid of zero posters after a certain amount of time ...not much help but keeps the people that are interested in the forum posting .

Posted by: azury

Yeah, getting rid of non posting ppl is maybe no a pleasent way but sure can be affectice.. if a person doesn't take a active part on the site, he should stop be one..

Posted by: Chopper

Ok im taking all this in.

What sort of time frame should it be before non posting members be removed?

Posted by: azury

A month is more then kind :)
But I think that if a member has poseted before, but stopped for a large amount of time (without informing about it), he should be considered has a non posting member too..

Posted by: Chopper

A month! I think thats a little short. Cause we do get some people signup and just read and lurk the forums for a good while before they make a post.

Posted by: azury

I was just suggesting m8..
Do what ever you think's right :)

Posted by: azury

Members: 997, Threads: 413, Posts: 1,727
that's a good improvment :)
an average of 2 posts per memeber, lol :)

Posted by: Dzalio

I'd say between 2-3 months of non-posting and their account should be deleted. I often wonder why people sign up in the first place and never post.

These boards never had a contest for referrals did they? Because often times when you have contests like that people get their friends who will never post here tos ign up.

Posted by: Chopper

Ok thanks for all your opinions;)

What thoughts do you all have on letting unregistered people being allowed to post?

Cheers

Posted by: azury

I don't like the idea of annonymous guests publishing on the forum.. after all, it is free and open for all..

Posted by: Dzalio

Yea, I agree. In fact, on my boards I completely turned off the options for guests to even view the threads. It somewhat solves the problem for people just signing up and never posting or just reading everything and downloading the attachments.

It also seems to encourage new sign-ups because people want to know what you've got to hide..haha.

Posted by: UK-CD'Z

Allowing guests to post is a bad idea, it only encourages flamers / useless posts etc etc......

Posted by: Chopper

I was thinking of letting guest post in the Site Feedback forum. Of couse it would only be on trial at first to see how it goes. anyone object to this idear?

I really appreciate all your feedback and im open to any new suggestion that would help improve the forum.

Cheers

I enabled guest posting in the general chat forum at my site, so that they could get used to using my forums, I then stated that if they want to post in other forums they have to register. There's this one guest, who started having a go at me because I wouldn't give him the games-guru style which I had just paid alot for, and then he comes out with this BS that my sig looks like Xeo's. So yes it does encourage flaming, but also it can make them want to register to see the other forums.

Posted by: azury

Posting annonymous guest not only flame, they can use it to advertise themselve or offend somehow (ofcourse free signment can also help advertisment, this way is much easier for them).
On my opinion, The General Discussion is maybe the most suitable if you want to give the guest a taste of all ov this.
And Chopper, don't mind or bother to thanking us, we do it for making this forum better - we will enjoy either :)

Posted by: Millward

Yes, it's really up to you Chopper, and I agree, if you were going to enable guest posting, i'd advise that you activate it in the general forum. It does cause flaming, but there are people out there who may be shy, or not fully understand what they are signing up for, and so would prefer to stay annonymous.

Im not going to let guest post at all!
And will be removing members accounts that have 0 post after 3 months of there signup date.
Hopfully this will improve tech forums.

* off to remove some accounts

Hey Chopper, will you also remove none-posting members (memebers who posted a bit but stopped for a long period and haven't informed on it)??

For now? No, Sometime in the future? Maybe.

Any other suggestions on what you would like to see done/added to tech forums please post them here for discussion.

Ive been thinking of setting up something special for those who contribute alot to tech forums. Like there own special forum that no one else can access and special deals at stores, inside info on tech forum, ect

This could encourage others to contribute more. What are your thoughts on this? What would you like to be avaliable for those that contribute alot?

Cheers

hmm... A car and a trip around the world woulb be just fine.. :D
*lol*
I guess no body in here is trying to get something beside the help from each other..

If someone joins and never posts, 90 days is plenty of time to keep 'em and the delete 'em.

I know that there is a record of last post, is there also a record of the last visit? If so, that would let you know if they have been lurking and reading.

For those that have posted and then stop, I suggest an email to them inviting them back. That could be a 90 day time period for the email to go out, then another 30 to return. No return, well, I guess they can rejoin if they want.

Sidenote: I read an article about forums, and the author suggested that people join and read for a couple of weeks before posting. That can be good and bad......

PS I'm glad you don't allow anonymous posting; IMO, too risky.

Good question but it's hard to find the answer of how many people participate. If you take a poll, you might see the fabricated results. However, just multiply the number by 5 and you'll get an estimated answer.

The reason I first joined the forum was because I needed help with a computer problem. I don't work with computers everyday (eg. regular job), but I am glad I found a place where I can learn more about them by "lurking and reading". I don't post often, but I do enjoy browsing through - so what do you do with people like me?!

They have joined and after 3 months they still havn't made a singal post.

OR

You request to be removed for Tech Forums

OR

If you are banned for some reason.

Since you have made a post you will not be removed;)

If there is a record of the last visit, not the last post, then the admin can tell if someone is coming and reading or has not even been here in a long time.

Plus, if you send an email about the intent to delete an inactive account, the inactive member then has a chance to post or say if they want to stay as a member. The email could say to make a post in a certain thread within a certain time to show their interest.

Just an idea, or two.

:D

Sounds like a great idear Dave I will use that policy.

Thats a good point. On my forums, many people are shy and "worried" about posting.

They need to know that we will welcome them to our community here, and there is no reason to be shy, or to look dumb.

Like they say..."The greatest risk is not taking one." :)

Hi all. My felings are similar to daveppeters. I am not, or at least do not feel, computer illiterate enough to start handing out solutions to problems. I have enough trouble trying to muddle through the problems I cause myself on my own pc. Seems I do like to try different settings, programs, & going "DOH" when it messes up my machine. I enjoy reading of others problems & advice given. I often find a lot on forums that apply to my own problems. I run WinXP & am a big believer in the restore option. Seems I have to use it on a weekly basis:):)
