Some of us may find that after installing Windows XP, the Internet connection gets slower.

Posted by: Ecniv

Hmm. I had not heard of this. I will have to try it out.

Posted by: microsoftne

sometimes the programmers here at M$ pass me these obscure tips, i will continue to pass them along....

Posted by: daveppeters

I tried, but when I put "gpedit.msc" in the run box, it says, "Windows cannot find gpedit.msc. Make sure you typed it right, blah, blah, blah" Is this good or bad?

Posted by: microsoftne

hmmmmm,,,make sure you are logged in as admin......let me know if it works for you

Posted by: daveppeters

I only have one account and it is an Admin account - any other suggestions?

Posted by: Shakie

Be sure that you are typing it in correctly. (Case doesn't matter, spelling does.)

gpedit.msc

If it still gives you an error, goto C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32 and look for GPEDIT. You can click on that file and it should bring up the box that mirosoftne is describing.

If you still cannot find it, then you need to A) Be sure you are logged on as Administrator; or B) Reinstall your OS if you are logged on as Administrator and cannot find it.

Correct me if I'm wrong guys. Hope this helps.

Posted by: Overclocker16

There is no gpedit.msc anywhere.

Posted by: devlish96

i found it, just like what micro said. perhaps it depends on the os that youre running. im running xp pro.

try looking on the XP cd for a replacement file or something.

Nice...it worked...and i do see a bit of a change

Posted by: Martin

Download speed over my 56k increased from 2.5 KB/sec. to 4.0 KB/sec. average sustained. :D

Posted by: devlish96

wait,...can i change it while still connected? i'm currently downloading stuff...

Posted by: Overclocker16

Man, I want to do this.

I searched for it and found

GPEDIT and under the Type it is a DL_File
GPEDIT.MS_ and under the Type it is a MS_File
GPEDITS.CH_ and under the Type it is a CH_File
GPEDITS.HL_ and under the Type it is a HL_File

I don't have a disc because it is a Sony Vaio so it just has like 8 backup discs which have XP Home on it.

Can I get this file somehow? Or is one of them right? If so what or how do I open it?

Posted by: devlish96

please correct me if im wrong,..but when i was configuring it...it indicated on the popup window thatit is supported on at least win xp pro

Posted by: Overclocker16

So only on XP Pro?

That should be mentioned. This doesn't work (atleast for me) on XP Home.

If it does, can someone send the file?

I searched for QoS.

Here is the thing.
To install QoS Packet Scheduler
Open Network Connections.
Click the Local Area Connection on which you want to install QoS Packet Scheduler, and then, on the File menu, click Properties.
If QoS Packet Scheduler is listed in the Components checked are used by this connection box, then it is already installed and you don't need to continue. If it is not listed, continue with the next step.

Click Install, click Service, and then click Add.
Click QoS Packet Scheduler, and then click OK.
Notes

To open Network Connections, click Start, click Control Panel, click Network and Internet Connections, and then click Network Connections.
Install Packet Scheduler on any end-systems on which you want to enable traffic shaping, traffic marking, or ISSLOW on a dial-up connection.
Should I uninstall it? Is there a way to change settings in it?

Posted by: devlish96

i'm sure there's some "work around" out there.

not quit sure how you're gonna do it...but this really works

Posted by: Overclocker16

As far as I know, it only works on Windows Server 2003 (enterprise in my place) and XP Pro.

overclocker,

what happened to this one? this looks promising..

Posted by: Overclocker16

Because I don't know how to edit anything in it.

Posted by: Slam'n Systems

yea...it works on Win2k3 Enterprise and XP Pro...thats all i see

Posted by: devlish96

ok here's for you overclocker,..try this. search for your network connections just as you described above. then right click on the icon..go to properties..click on the networking tab...is if theres any option for QoS Packet Scheduler. if there is ...check the box right next to it and install. not sure if this would work,...you can at least give it a try.

Posted by: daveppeters

So does this tip only work on XP Pro, cuz I have XP Home. Is there any workaround or way to apply this in XP Home?

Posted by: devlish96

daveppeters,

thats exactly what we're trying to find out...

Posted by: microsoftne

sorry for the delay in answering, I have been extrememly busy...I am discussing it with some of the origional programmers for xp i shall return with the results soon.....

Posted by: devlish96

no problem ,...your help will be extremely useful...and please keep sendin those tips!

Posted by: Shakie

Hrm... this didn't help me any... :(

Posted by: stormy78

I'm going to give it a try. Will this take effect the next time I connect to the internet or while I'm connected?

Posted by: devlish96

I think you have to reboot. thats what i did.

Posted by: stormy78

Hmm, it didn't really help. It must not really help out very well for dial-up users.

Posted by: Apokalipse
