Discuss I need help removing a hijacker (IGetNet/VX2)
Posted by: MrHandicapable
I'm not too sure which one. My symptoms match those of IGetNet (and also Spybot picks it up) but Adaware detects VX2. Before you start complaining that there are a thousand ways to get rid of them, none have worked for me. Adaware says that there were a few files that can't be deleted, so it asks to re-scan on reboot, yet the same thing happens again. For IGetNet, I followed some instructions on a manual removal, but they didn't work for me. I'm not too sure what else to do.
Here is my HijackThis log; any help is appreciated.

Hi MrHandicapable,
Occassionally, the log readers have some computer problems, too. We will get to this ASAP. Thanks for your patience!
BTW, IGetNet typically causes hostfile redirects like these:
O1 - Hosts: 69.20.16.183 auto.search.msn.com
O1 - Hosts: 69.20.16.183 search.netscape.com
O1 - Hosts: 69.20.16.183 ieautosearch
If you didn't change those, then you can have HJT fix those.
More to come later.

Ok, thanks. The thing is, although I have HJT to remove those lines, they come back on the next scan.

Run Hijack This again and put a check by these. Close ALL windows except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Restart to safe mode. http://www.spyware911.net/safemode.htm
Because XP will not always show you hidden files and folders by default, Go to Start > Search and under "More advanced search options".
Make sure there is a check by "Search System Folders" and "Search hidden files and folders" and "Search system subfolders" Show hidden files & folders: http://www.spyware911.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=27
Next click on My Computer. Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and "Hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
Click "Apply" then "OK"
Now find and delete this file:
C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe
Also in safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.
Go to Start > Run and type %temp%in the Run box. The Temp folder will open. Click Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.
Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.
Then go to Add/Remove programs:
We are getting rid of these entries (due to clot factor (this is a step you can skip but I wouldn't cause these clog up your computer)

Remove via Start -> Settings -> Add/Remove Programs/QuickTime

Reboot
Empty the Recycle Bin
Then post another log. Liz

These 01's just do NOT want to cooperate cause otherwise you have a clean log.
So we are going to try something else.
You are going to RENAME them! And here is how: http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm But first test them to be sure they are not valid, ok, testing is also covered on that page. Once you do that, post a new HiJack Log and that should be it. Liz
