Can someone tell me in simple terms how PBAX works please.

Sure....what exactly do you want to know?
PBX systems are simply a server that runs thats holds 10 to 100s to even 1000s of phone lines that "trunk" off of one single line.
So, for instance, you may have one phone number that you call and then have extentions off of the one phone number.
A PBAX or PABX is totally automated so that no single person answers the phone in order to transfer the call to a particular extention....it's all done via automated services.
