Discuss Console comparison

How about a comparison of the 3 consoles mentioned? Compare xBox, Cube, and PS 1 & 2

I'm not sure what all the criteria would be, but could include

price

memory

options

controllers

what else?
I would like to see some good comparisons that are not subjective (like the ol' the controller is too big). I know opinions will come out, but........well, it would be interesting to compare.

Personally, I believe that the XBOX is the best gaming console out right now. I have played all the systems that you have listed Dmo224 except the GameCube and the XBOX comes to my mind the first.

The graphics are the main thing that makes me decide which console is the best and certainly the XBOX has the best. Their console is very nice as well. Also, the XBOX has a DVD player and other little options added to it that make it even better. The only thing about it that isn't that great would be the price. However, if you really think about the price and what you get for it it doesn't seem that much.

In second place, I would have the GameCube. Even though the graphics are not as good and the controller seems kinda tiny it's still better than the PS 1&2 in my opinion. The PS's get third place for me, but the console is still amazing. The good thing about it is that it's fairly cheap now and the console has tons of game by now.

That's it from me. Hope that kinda helped :D

Recently, it was discovered that the CPU "behaves" very much like a Celeron, due to its lowered 128k of cache (as opposed on 256k on Pentium 3's). A custom NVIDIA GPU is also included, capable of 125 million polygons/sec. My opinion: BS. I would consider that a synthetic estimate of flat-shaded polygons, not fully lit, fully textured polygons. In reality I would estimate around 50-60 million, about equal to last-generation GeForce3 GPU's.

For PS2 Junkies:

Soon enough, the PS2 will have its own distribution of Linux (Kondara Linux; similar to Red Hat's distribution), due out sometime in May, which will allow developers full access to the PS2's hardware/software. It also should be noted that the PS2 got a rough start from Sony shipping incomplete SDK's to game developers (sounds like N64).
The graphics are the main thing that makes me decide which console is the best
Quality of GFX is the last thing I look for in a game console. Whilst the XBox is the most powerfull, the gamecube still does pretty well for itself when it comes to stats, powered by an IBM microprocessor, and a gfx chip designed by ATi, just for £130 [current uk price] is a good deal, if you are looking at it powerwise. As for gamewise, the current game selection is a bit limited, and there are quite a few 'kids' games, but with future tites such as the revamped 'Resident Evil' [known as Biohazard everywhere else outside Europe I think..] the gamecube should hopefully be appealing to adult gamers too. If you are fussy about graphics quality, the quality of the gfx is pretty high, but gfx quality also relies on the quality of the graphics in the actual game, not just the abilities of the console. [Does that make sense?]

I think it has been said somewhere on this board before - a console cannot be judged by the quality of its graphics... at least not yet. So far, the limiting factor graphics-wise on current console systems has been the game developers. The X-Box, PS2, and GameCube have yet to be used to their full potentials, so I find it hard to decide which console "has better graphics"... although, the GPU in the X-Box falls somewhere in between a Geforce3, and a Geforce3 Ti500, which puts it miles ahead of the "GS" included with the PS2.

Also, it should be noted that although the X-Box's CPU only includes 128Kb of L2 cache (as opposed to the PIII's 256Kb), it is still an 8-way set associative cache, rather than the 4-way found on the Celeron. This means that while it's not a true PIII, it's certainly not a Celeron either...

By the way - there is also an X-Box linux project in the works.. although it's not as far as the PS2 project (because of Microsoft's stupid security measures), it is still progressing... it will likely be much better than linux for PS2, because the X-Box gives users a hard drive to work with...

In my humble opinion..... The XBox far outways the other comparasons. The XBox has a linux package which you can either run it off the linux CD or you can install it on the 8Gb HDD. If you opt for the second option... You can no longer play normal games which is a bit of a bumber. The XBox consists of a Plll 733Mhz Processor; 8Gb HDD; the game cube has somthing like a 333Mhz processor:; O HDD. it only has ram. The XBox has been hacked. You can read how at

I picked the Cube. Based on these reasons.

PS2- Good system it has the "worst" parts.(as in least powerful) Huge game selection(but only 4-5 appeal to me after playing them)

XBox- Most powerful. Rumor has it the processor is made with cheap parts and runs only at like 400Mhz. Has a HD and can handle great graphics. Games tend to be 3rd party or graphic ended(great graphics and sucky gameplay to me) For me, most of the games seem to be a hack'n'slash type(kill everything very repetitive)

Cube-Not the best parts, but not the worst. It actually has a 440Mhz processor(g_moir) and it has a sorta limited selection. But more games are coming out. Most of the games appeal to me(I like platformers) In my opinion Metroid Prime is an awesome game combining great graphics, long gameplay, great story, not too hard or too easy, and almost no feeling of repitition(these are what all games need in my opinion, of course)

Now i'm disappointed about what i've read here.

I was looking at getting back into the console market (after selling my PSOne a few years ago.)

I was considering an XBox, but IMO (for what it's worth) all three consoles really have to take a bigger step forward for me to get my wallet open (yes it does happen, although my mates down the pub won't agree with that).

I've hence decided to (within the next 12-18 months) to build from scratch my own kick *** PC.

Also console game prices (in the UK) really need to come down too.

Plus i love my Championship Manager game, i just can't get enough of that footy (soccer  ) sim! YAY!

Here's my two cents.

XBox (1st): The Xbox is a truly powerful machine and it has a wide variety of games. The new Controller-S is an excellent replacement for the horrid first generation Xbox controllers. It is my favorite controller. Smaller than the first one, it has a button arrangement similar to the PS/PS2's Dual-shock. The Xbox also has some of the most amazing games I've seen (Halo, Splinter Cell...).

Gamecube (2nd): The Gamecube is nothing to sneeze at. It is a very powerful system with awesome texture capabilities and FAST load times. Resident Evil on the GC has some of the most amazing graphics and gameplay that you will find.

PS2 (3rd): You cannot argue that this system isn't good. It has the largest installed game base. Granted it is not as powerful as the other two, but you're going to find a much bigger game selection on the PS2 (for now). Games to check out: Grand Theft Auto Vice City and FFX are some of the best games you'll find, period.

I have no opinons on the systems since I own none of them, I was reading the replys so that I can buy my kids one for Xmas, I really appreciate all the advise, and am going to start comparing prices..

I would rate the Xbox as being the best system. It has the most advanced graphics, it has four players, and the controllers separate in the middle so it doesn't fall from a ledge or something like that (not a key selling point, but still pretty darn cool). Unlike the other systems, it has built-in memory so you don't have to worry about unreliable memory cards and stuff either. Gamecube is second in my opinion. It has four players, the controllers are the most ergonomic and it's the console that's going to have all of the classic Mario games. Playstation 2 is, in my opinio, a last resort. It only has two players (unless you would like to spend additional funds on adapters, which is just annoying). Games that support the adapters are few and far between anyways. I'm sure that by now all of you know the ups and downs of each console, and have picked your favorite long ago, but I figured I might as well post my thoughts.

i would have to say:

1st: XBOX, ok first off, you dant have to buy a memory card to save your games, that right there saves you $30 and the ps2 memory cards are only 8mb, 1/1024th of the size of the xbox HDD, im not sure on the size of the GC MMC, secondly, the xbox has 4 controller ports built in, so you dont need a multitap like the PS2 (i know the GC has 4 as well, and thats a bonus for it) thirdly, the xbox has a nic built in, you dont have to go out and buy the network adaptor (another $50) fourth, the games just look awesome, and i know that you should never buy a console based on the graphics, but this just adds to the sweetness, fifthly, all of the good, new games are coming to xbox (counterstrike: condition zero, halo 2, Half Life 2, Doom 3, etc) those are 4 reasons i would buy an xbox if i didnt own one, and lastly MS is never ever going to go under, you can count on thier stuff being around forever, im not too concerned with sony, but look at what heppened to sega

2nd PS2 now, i gave this 2nd because the games, pure and simple, this system has so many more games out than any other system available, its not even funny, coupla big ones: final fantasy and metal gear

3rd GC, i give it 3rd because it seems a little too childish for me, now granted i do enjoy mario party 5 and stuff, but pikmin and pokemon are their big sellers, most mature titles probably will never see a nintendo, lol

I'd have to say...

1. PS2: It has all the best games out right now, although they all look like Crap on the PS2, its the gameplay that matters right?

2. Gamecube: The Classics! Mario, Mario Kart, Metroid, Star Fox, but only 1 online game out: Phantasy Star Online.

3. X-Box: Its pretty much a computer. The best CONSOLE graphics, Only good games are Halo, and I didnt even like it that much. But it has the biggest online gaming selection out.

O and read this about the X-Box: http://maddox.xmission.com/xbox_suckit.html
Read it and laugh/weep :)

plz dont flame for my opinions :D
