I wonder how people can live with dial-up....56K correct?
Posted by: Martin
Anything below 128K would be considered unacceptable to most, but using dial-up for a long time will eventually cause adaptation to such slow speeds.
EDIT: I should probably add some more options to this poll.
Posted by: Bleep
Cable here as well.
I worked for years online, using dial-up and was always frustrated with the disconnects and slow loading pages. At the time, the small town I lived in, didn't have broadband. Man!!!was I happy when I finally got cable.

Pretty much the same here... I was in for a shock for several weeks when I got cable broadband a couple years back.

I have a question for you guys, speaking of internet connections and what not. Is PPPoE (point to point protocol over ethernet) standard for this type? Or is there something else that's used that I'm not aware of.
I know the standard for dialup is PPP so I don't see how it would make much of a difference since it's both on the phone line.
When I get a really good job I'll get a personal connection of 7.1 downstream, 768k up (It's 240.00 a month - quite a dent in the wallet)
Posted by: Martin
PPPoE is what is now widely used/standardized for residential ADSL connections. You can pay extra to get an "always-on" connection, which was prevalent prior to 2001 (before the big switch to PPPoE), though I'm not sure if many ISPs offer this option anymore.
PPPoA (PPP over ATM) is also used, although it's not too common.
Posted by: tylertherobot
The always-on is free through Verizon

Umh, Placebo, I use Optimum Online Internet access with a motorala cable modem plugged into the wall and my connection is consistently running at about 7000 Kbps (sometimes higher sometimes lower). I've seen it peak at about 8000 Kbps, but on any normal day it'll run on about 7000 Kbps, give or take. If I'm not mistaken thats more then 12x as fast as your connection on an internet connection which you remarked as pathetic in your post (view above).
7000/576=12.152777.......
I don't know if internet connections are different where you are, but as far as I see it that definately takes high speed cable connections off the list of pathetic, since I'm on a cable connection and I have a faster connection.

right now...i have probably the slowest connection of anybody on this forum. Cable and DSL are not available in my area. The phone lines are still pulse based and I am lucky if I can even get a 26.4kbps connection. Most of the time i am at 24.4, at busy times i can be as low as 19.2 or 14.4. Here in a few weeks, I am getting a wireless cable modem that ranges from 2-6Mbps both ways. I would already have it, but I had a family vacation i had to attend..lol. I'm greatly looking forward to getting my broadband, but until then, i have to deal with download speeds in the hundreds of bytes while y'all enjoy as much as 500KB per second download speeds.

I don't think of it as being like that and neither should you, lets keep this thread civilised and on topic.
Retro.
Posted by: beedubaya
True, but for one thing, there are threads like this weekly it seems. Secondly, imagine yourself on 56k, or even 19.2k or 9.6k like I am sometimes, having no way to get broadband in the immediate future, and you constantly see everybody gloat about how great their connection is, when you are the ONLY one without broadband. How would you feel?
Posted by: Retro
I know how you feel, I used to be on dial-up and I'm sure the majority of the people on this forum were at one stage. I know times have moved on and a large number of members are at higher connection speeds and so I respect the way you have been faithfull to the forum by contributing as much as you can.
However, this is an open forum, meaning that people are allowed to post what they want within reason, and so it is near impossible to stop the same or similar threads being posted more than once. Therefore, my only suggestion is that you approach one of the moderators, if you feel uncomfortable, and try and make this thread sticky - this will hopefully stop it being recreated so many times and allow you to have a more enjoyable experience on the forums.

As for others having faster internet, well, thats just a part of life, accept it. ****, look how many people are working with crappy a$$ computers (no offence to ya TheMajor)......wonder if they cringe and moan everytime someone complains that their X800 isn't fast enough or whatever.
Posted by: beedubaya
I agree, this thread should be a sticky as well as the "post your desktop screenshots" and "system pics" thread. Times have moved on and its just us few rural people that are still on dial-up. Even more and more rural areas are getting access to broadband through cable and fixed wireless. Excuse me for getting so mad about that, I am very irritable lately because saying my life have been a living **** for the past month is stating it lightly. I get annoyed by the smallest things. I apologize for that.

I'm using dial-up, however, because my isp is going through a merger, they're both moved premises and are 'bottle-necking' both isp's customer into the one system - it's funny hearing them try and blame your system for their faults. Previously clocking at approximately 38 kbps, now I clocked them at 8 k, that's right, no typing error.
Since I'm paying close to ADSL prices for such service (30 AUD, approx. 20 USD) this made me decide to try and find the finances required to cover the initial costs and finally step into the present.

Beedubaya, glad to hear you're getting reconnected, and the satellite should be faster than the fixed wireless anyway, so I guess you do get SOMETHING for the extra cost. I'm sure you've tried to renegotiate with the 256k fixed wireless company...what have they been saying?

I have tried to negotiate with the fixed wireless company and they give me the middle finger. It doesn't surprise me, the owner of that company doesn't even know the difference between bits and bytes lol. I am not going with satellite because there will be cable in my area by this summer. I know its so because they have already started hanging the lines. I just totally can't wait.

Hello,
Wow...most people in the UK have either 300Kbps or 600Kbps (downstream). Only recently have the large cable company NTL upgraded their speeds, from 300Kbps to 1Mbps and 600Kbps to 2Mbps.
I think the highest available speed available for consumers in the UK is just 3Mbps. We and our data aren't moving too quickly.
They aren't too generous either. My NTL 2Mbps broadband connection is limited to a maximum downstream data transfer of only one 1 Gigabits/day! Before the upgrade, it was unlimited. And if I cross the limit, then a charge is incurred. I'd rather have the 600Kbps connection back!!!

I am seeing a lot of high end builders running cat5 cable along with cable and phone to every room, with a patch panel down stairs, waiting for the customer to move in with their router. These are homes that their TV room is twice as big as ny living room. The house looks like a small hotel. I guess it's just sour grapes.. I will never be able to afford one.

Posted by: waynejkruse10
i was thinking of cable but what if there is heaps of people in your area with cable, doesnt it screw up the speeds?
Posted by: Condraz23
I'm on a dial-up connection right now and I wish I had a faster connection. Too bad anything else other than dial-up is too expensive for us. I never knew so much people used high-speed internet here.
Posted by: TheMajor
Broadband is much cheaper than dial-up, at least over here.
Posted by: waynejkruse10
europe has good internet
Posted by: TheMajor
Yes, 20Mb ADSL for 30-40 dollars over here. 20Mb cable is about 80-90 dollars but gets better speeds.
Posted by: waynejkruse10
they are bringing out 24mbit ADSL 2+ here in Australia, slowly though. Telstra, the government Telco limits the Speed for some reason. When ADSL was released, the Telstra DSLAMS were capped at 1.5mbit rather than 8mbit. When ADSL 2+ comes out, Telstra will cap the DSLAMS at 12mbit rather than 24mbit.
But other companies have been bringing out their own DSLAMS without speed limitations.
Posted by: TheMajor
They will release 30Mb ADSL over here soon. Probably already in a few months.
Posted by: waynejkruse10
thats nice, makes me want to move to europe
Posted by: TheMajor
I think 20Mb is a bit overkill, though.
Posted by: waynejkruse10
when you get up to those speeds you run into sites that simply cant get data to you fast enough.

I recently got a speed upgrade...supposed to be 9Mbps but I am testing well over that at www.speakeasy.net/speedtest
Download Speed: 13991 kbps (1748.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 736 kbps (92 KB/sec transfer rate)
Hard to believe last year at this time I was just getting off of 14.4Kbps dial-up.
Posted by: TheMajor
That's a big increase from 4Mbps.
Posted by: talldude123
my download speed is 512 Kb/s, but seems fast to me...

I just got 16mbps down Comcast cable internet
Posted by: wrestlingnrj
Home: Adelphia 4162 kbps up/431 kpbs down

Satellite. Way overpriced, impossible to game on, download limits, and bad in cloudy weather. Absolutely horrible technology. Soon as DSL/Cable becomes available in really rural areas such as where I live, I'll laugh as satellite internet companies such as DirecWay go bankrupt. I HATE satellite.
Also, wireless cable sounds like such a contradiction! :p
Posted by: waynejkruse10
they have just upgraded my exchange for 24/1.5mbit ADSL2+. Should be getting it soon.

Down here in SA the max speed we have is 1mb and that costs an arm and leg, the normal here is 512Kbps and then downloads at about 120KBps
How much do you all pay?

You are so lucky. Down here in south Africa we have this telephone company thats ripping our limps abart here called Telkom (ever heard of them) well they are the only Telephone company and can raise the prices as High as they want.
For example you pay $60 for your good connetion, and I have worked it out via our different curruncies (we use Rand and 4.45 rands equals $1 for you) and now Im gonna give you the price in $ for you for what we pay.
For a 512\120 5GB we pay R600 which is about = $135 for you, which is a normal price here. For me your $60 connetion is about R250 for us which is nothing plus you are really owning it with the High Caps and Lines.
Are we being ripped off or what!

Monopolies are wrong.

It would be like that here if only telstra existed. And some telstra plans are similar to your plans but only if you go over your monthly download quota. Then its like $180 AUD per GB.
Telstra, the government phone used to be called Telecom. They have made the whole ADSL system into the stupidest totalitarian regeme. Its very stupid what a lot of ISP's around Australia and the world are crapping out on their customers.
So there is no alternative ISP in South Africa? Telstra might just get their act together because so many people who have originally signed up with Telstra with a contract are going with other ISP's after its finished. Now that independant ISP's are putting in their on hardware its really opening up the ADSL system because other ISP's dont need to conform to Telstra's artificial bandwidth caps and their high wholesale prices.

I'm currently on Dial Up and It's just crazy it's hard to get things done ... but of course the location that we are at right now ( New Community) Cable/DSL isnt available for our area. We have been waiting for DSL/Cable to be available in are area for god knows when? ... We have been calling quest to see if there dsl is available in are area and there answer is always "No" it should be available in a month or 2 ... so the other day I seen a big sign 2 houses down from are place sayin "Quest DSL is now available in your area" so im like YES! it's finally here lol ... so it was time to call Quest and asked if it was available and there answer was like "No" again lol ... due to the telephone lines we have so ya I been stuck with slow dial up for very long time.

Dial-up is really slow.
Poor Mikee, he has a pretty nice computer, but he has it running on 33K dial-up :(

1mb broadband.
100-170k download and around 50 upload, depends how busy ntl's servers are.
Sometime get over a 2mb connection speed.
