Do broadband ISP's determine your upload/download speed by what plan you signed up for? Mine was rated at 1.5mbs down and 256 up, and I do generally get that speed, but does the dsl modem determine/moderate that speed or does my ISP(SBC)?

its whatever your internet plan was. all they do is limit your speed to that plan. they garauntee you a minimum speed, if you constantly go below it than complain to your ISP. if only occassionally it dips below the minimum than don't worry about it. I've heard it is common for people who sign for 1.5 megabit cable internet to get 2 megabit speeds normally. I do not think the modem has a large influence on the speed if any at all.

If your connection is hooked up to a CO, SBC will leave your connection uncapped for the first 10 or so days, and will cap it based on the plan you signed for, and furthermore, whatever speed appears to be stable on your line. (actually, ASI is the one who applies the caps on your line)

I believe most other broadband ISP's follow the same method, if not different.

Thanks for the replies. Basically why I was asking is because I am worried about this router/dsl modem (router and modem all in one) that I ordered. I was worried that I would get lower speeds than my current dsl modem gets me..

So Do most modems basically have the same capabilities -speed wise, and your plan determines what advantage you can take of those modem speed capabilities?
