It seems that more and more people are talking about it, but I'd like to know how many (that read this) have actually done it.

Got new LED's, New Personalised Jewel & Nice Blue/Silver paint/Sticker job. Aswell as an Xecutor 2.3 lite chip inside. And a 40Gb Hdd inside. :D . xBox's rule>!!!.
Also i know a friend whose got Unix (like LinuX) on his xBox, with keyboard/mouse. Its a word processor lol :S.

Ive seen a modded X box and that shi@t is cool. I want one so bad but I have other stuf I need to pay for before I do one. I like how you dont have to like change Cd's to play a game,watch a movie etc.

Nahh, I don't want to contirbute to what was the partial downfall of the Dreamcast. People copied the games like crazy and no one bought any.
You can do the same with mods. Simply rent the game and copy it to your hard drive.
I think the industry's game prices are high enough as it is.
Though I do agree it can be neat to install all the Super Nintendo games for free and all, but I don't know. If you want that they do have emulators for old games.
Not to mention I don't want to have my xbox fried cause micorsoft some how detects that I have one.
Lets just say I have very mixed feelings about it.

SEATTLE -- In the days before the release of the hotly anticipated Halo 2 video game for the Xbox game console, some gamers noticed a sudden spike in the number of people being kicked off Microsoft Corp.'s online game service.
That was no coincidence.
The company said it increased its crackdown on those suspected of making unauthorized modifications to their Xboxes to ensure all players can blast away on an equal footing when joining the Xbox Live online gaming community.
People usually modify Xboxes so they can either cheat on games or use pirated copies, although some also have made changes so they can use the Xbox for other functions, such as a music player.
Cameron Ferroni, general manager of the Xbox software platform, said Microsoft has no interest in taking legal action against individual users. But the company does want to banish cheaters from its online service.
"We want to preserve the experience of Xbox Live,'' he said.
It's hard to know how many of Microsoft's 15.5 million Xbox users have actually modified their game consoles, although analysts and those at Microsoft say it's a small percentage.
Microsoft has a unique glimpse into the 1 million Xbox Live users' computers because those users agree Microsoft has the right to gather certain information.
Ferroni declined to go into specifics of how the company can check Xbox Live users' machines for suspected modifications but said Microsoft has no way of checking to see whether players who don't use Xbox Live have modified their machines.
Neil Smith, an intellectual-property lawyer in San Francisco, said there's little legal risk in modifying a game system for relatively benign personal use, such as to give your character infinite lives or to more easily advance to another level.
But Microsoft said it wants to guard against such cheating on Xbox Live, where multiple players can take part in games together. Ferroni said the goal is to make sure there's a level playing field.
Smith, who has represented several video-game companies, said users face more legal risk -- and companies have more leverage -- if a person is modifying the system to play pirated or other unauthorized games. That's especially true if the person is altering his or her system's security codes or settings.
Companies are much more eager to go after potential pirates, because stolen copies can lead to lost sales. Microsoft said it has focused its legal efforts on those it thinks are manufacturing pirated games or mass-producing Xbox modifications.
Smith said the legality of modifying other people's technology remains hazy.
Other tech firms have grappled with how much can be done to their systems without their consent.
This year, Seattle-based RealNetworks caused a stir when it said it had developed software that allows songs purchased from its online music store to transfer to Apple Computer Inc.'s iPod, by skirting internal copy protections. Apple responded by saying that RealNetworks "has adopted the tactics and ethics of a hacker.''
Other video-game consoles don't seem to face as much tinkering as the Xbox, said PJ McNealy, an analyst with American Technology Research. Sony Corp.'s PlayStation 2 doesn't have complex antipiracy measures, he said, and Nintendo Co.'s cartridge-based games are much more difficult to pirate than the CDs that Microsoft and Sony use.

got a crystal xbox with a 1.0 motherboard, and a 200 gig seagate and a new philips dvd drive. its a kick *** system. oh, and a smartxx modchip
and soon to be is a swapable led system, on breadboard

Two questions are there solderless solutions for mod chips?
Isnt there a specific wattage for soldering guns you have to use 15-20 watts any higher and it damages your xbox mobo right?

I have softmodded mine, so I haven't actually seen the inside. It is alot cheaper and its almost as good as a mod chip. I do plan on adding a bigger hard drive too, since I only have about 2.5 gigs left on the E drive. I use EvoX, and I also have Xbox Media Center (which I love - you can stream movies/music/pictures off of your computer, and also alot more).

Not everyone who mods their xbox does so just to copy games. (Although it is tempting.) Think of it like a car. Fanatics add all these things like better rims, or a new paint job to make their car look awesome. Sort of like the xbox. Being able to change the dashboard or turn off your xbox with a few button presses on your controller. Not the best examples but you should get the idea. Back on topic..
I've softmodded three xboxes. It was hard trying to find the stuff to do it rather than the actual modding part.

not u wont hurt your box, if you set it on the mobo(for some stupid reason) and leave it there for a couple seconds it will damage it. If its to high a voltage. It all just depends on how lucky you are. Just dont do anything stupid like that and everything will be alright.
EDIT: After about 30 watts its useless. But it will heat up quicker! LOL

I've never modded one, wouldn't know the first thing, but I did purchase one that was a Halo limited edition with a green lightning skin and the Xecuter 2 chip with an additional 240 something GB hardrive. Best system ever! Haha. Now if I could just figure out how to delete the games I no longer want I'd be golden.

i got my xbox modded about 2 years ago. it has an xecuter 2.6 lite with x-disk installation setup.
i hardly use it for games nowadays, every now and then to play some fighting games on "final burn alpha xxx pr".. but most of the time i use XBMC for my mp3's and video files.

you wouldnt need to FTP to delete anything from your xbox. you can do it directly by going to "XBMC" aka xbox media center.
go to "my files", then your "f:/" and find the game or file you want to get rid of, press "y" to highlight and on the left side of the screen select delete.

Wow. I don't think the moderators would like angry emails from Microsoft and other game publishers because people are telling how to copy games on here. I have a custom see thru blue case with a clear jewel lighted by 8 white leds, a 250 gig hd, an Xecuter 3 ce mod chip with custom front panel with buit in XLCD. W00t. I'll get pictures as soon as possible.

Thats it, its rather simple and customized to my needs, which are Gamming, and occational need to play with linux on a xbox, and live for map updates.

But I gotta tell you about the blow hole, because I dont think many came up with this idea for xbox yet, or made it look near stock. Asfar as what I did I dry sanded the jewl, then wet sanded it till back to transparent. Then dremeled a hole in the top leaving a 1cm lip(I had planned on glueing the jewl back on till I got this idea) Then I got a sheet of 1cm thick plastic and heated the plastic into a curve that fits the lip and let it chill back to solid instead of a flexible solid. After making 5 of them that left enough room for air to escape. Glued these to the lip and jewl using epoxy. Then for the fan I found 4 srew holes that I was able to glue to the lid of the xbox after cutting away enough of the heat shield to fit a 80mm fan. After that and everything is secure youre done, and just connect the fan into the same power drawl as the stock OEM fan. Now you have a fan that blows hot air out the top of the lid while keeping the jewl in its same location.

The second my phone line gets repaired Ill up them to a host. Other then that my connection is limited due to radio interference and a unbalnced phone line so I got a max up and down of about .5kb/s. Also I cant hold a stable connection long so Im SOL.

I wanna mod my xbox sometime, I just hate people that use mods on xbox live. They need mods to win. Now I dont mind if you use your mods to mess around and have fun in a custom game or something but when im playing a ranked match and people use there mods to make it where my team mates and I are falling from the sky and getting snipped... thats bogus. People need to learn how to play the game and not mod during ranked games. Whats worse is they talk trash to you when you cant do anything about it. Its sad when people resort to cheating.

-samsung 605b
-cleared jewel and working dvd window
-blue/UV controller port leds, 80mm blue fan install, lots more blue and UV leds to be installed for this project "burple" im calling it. It will be half purple and half blue everywhere. paintob, leds, etc.
-its still a WIP right now but its coming along good so far.....
- when I bought the xbox it had a very messed up paintjob on the front faceplate. look in the pics to see what I mean....

I used to chip PS1's back inthe day with the soldering and such. are these the same way or what. I'd like a step by step of how to do this if anyone knows a site.
Also, Iwant to hook it up to my network and stream movies from a server, that's possible right? I'm meaning DVD rips (iso's, VOB's or which format for this?)

DVD2XBOX is an application for the xbox that copies games to it's harddrive.
Yes, you can network them and stream movies from a server.

My x-box is modded, I got a red flame graphics and I took out the jewel sanded it down and painted it red. I also installed a 300 gig hard drive, I had to partition it so could use all 300 gigs.
