is it true that mac computer are not upgradable when it comes to hardware?

Posted by: g5orbust

Nope. Certain models require more skill than others (IE: replacing the hard drive in an iMac or an eMac) but as a whole all Macs have upgradable hardware. The towers have the most user friendly upgradability as they open up fully, have standard memory slots, AGP and hard drvie bays, etc.

ei thanx for that info....i'm just curious bout mac :)

The only drawback is.... everything is proprietary to Apple. So expect to pay extra!

not necessarily. Not all mac hardware is from apple. You would just need to make sure the hardware you buy, is designed to work with Macs. There are several companies that make processor upgrades for Macs that have no relation to Apple, they just bought the rights to use the G3/G4 architecture from Motorola and then sell you their version of that processor. And the same thing with Ram and HD's and Vid cards. My iMac's custom Ram came from Viking memory inc. and my new HD came from Maxtor. and the Vid card is from ATI. The optical drives are also non-apple. :)

the G5 is especially upgradable
it has AGP, IDE, SATA, SCSI, PCI-X...... can't remember all of the ports it has off the top of my head
you can upgrade a G5 with any device that connects to those ports..... like you can put in an ATI x800 which is an AGP8x card

The G5 doesnt have SCSI....

But nonetheless its a very future proof machine, or at least as long as AGP is still around. Also I think Apple may be going with the Geforce 6800, as the specs for it on the nVidia website cites mac support, though Im sure the x800 (maybe x820 is apple decides to go PCI Express) will be an option from ATI.

(checks apple's site)
...........so they don't have SCSI
you could always get a SCSI card couldn't you?
