Discuss building your own G5

I was wondering, is it possible to buy a Mac G5 pretty much bare (mobo, CPU's, case and PSU) so you can put all your own parts in?

Well since the mobo is proprietary, the chip is sold only to Apple (and other, authorized outlets that use the PPC970 for other things), the case is made only by Apple and the PSU is a custom 700+ watt piece, Id say thats a no. That being said Im sure you could find all these pieces in various places but the overall cost would be MUCH more than just buying the complete system. Its pretty much the real deal or no deal as far as price is concerned.

I think the G5 was engineered to only allow RAM, Video, and Memory modifications. However there are manuals and equippment for 'pimping' out your G5. Heh, MacAddict Magazine did an article over this, and it was... interesting.

But yes, The G5 is "what you see is what you can't touch" :)

EDIT: However, in at least two years, the aftermarket companies should be producing G5 processors along with Mobo's among otherthings that you can put into and older G4 tower or something. That's what they've done with the G3/G4 and the old beige G3 towers/yosemite towers.:) But it's also quite pricy from what I've heard. A 1.42 ghz G4 processor runs about $500.. Not to mention the video, Ram, and owning the previous PowerMac to put it all into.

ive been to apple's website and went to the G5's (I clicked on the dual 2GHZ machine) went to customise and found they won't let you buy it without things like the vid card, and had a minimum of 2 gig RAM
pity, I was looking forward to being able to build one

on a note, do you think Apple will release a G6, or will the next model be called something else?
what do you think we should expect from it?

Why would you want to change the already beautifully engineered system? It runs faster then anything else you could put in there, and they did such a wonderful job of setting it up you can open the side and drool for hours.

The G5 will be around for a very, very long time. Expect the process to be .65µ before you even see speculation of a G6.

wat in the world was that odd symbol???
powerbooks are cool. they are like huge ipods.

µ=some really small measurement

it's just that I'd like to put in my own video card and such, they only have a choice of Radeon 9600 pro and Radeon 9800 pro...... I was thinking 9600/9800 XT, or even an x800

µ
micro
10 to the power of -6
number of the order 0.000001

refers in this case to the thickness of 'wires' on the chip

yeah I made a mistake, its .065µ, not .65µ.
