Posted by: Fahim

i have tried LONGHORN it is too heavy man
0ne cannot just make it installed on a averga speed computer
mine is P4 but i was not satisfied with it

Posted by: CableModem

its funny ppl are gonna replace their xp machines with new xp machines cuz the wait is so long!!!!! :D :D :D

Posted by: blankcanvas

Probably the reason it ran so slow on your system was because its all beta copies that you people are downloading, i'm sure by the time it comes out, the same system requirments for XP will be required for it.

Posted by: beedubaya

Longhorn will require a much more beefy computer than XP. Bill Gates expects Longhorn era PCs to be 5-6GHz, 1TB hard drive, 4GB RAM, and is building Longhorn around those specs.

Posted by: Demalii

uhm, there are no beta versions out yet, they're all alpha and yes this is why they're so slow... it hasn't created anything but basic drivers.. so it can't conform to each system. But once it comes out it's supposed to be nice an advanced, and it won't be out till 2006, don't kid yourself

2006...that's good news. XP is great, and I have never seen a better OS from Microsoft, so I am in no hurry to see Longhorn. The longer it is before Longhorn comes out means a longer time before I have to shell out more money to Bill Gates.

Unfortunately that just isnt possible with Longhorn. Longhorn boasts a new form of anti-piracy software. Once it is detected that a person is trying to pirate this new version of windows, it sends a radio frequency signal out to space which gets sent back to Bill Gates evil laboratory. He then dispatches several ninjas to the offenders whereabouts. Thereby getting rid of any threat of piracy in a descreet manner.

you cant say its crap when its nearly 2 years befor the release date.
if it is the alpha version that people are using then they would of relesed it already.

why would they spend 2 more years developing it when they have released the alpha version? dont make sense.

ROFL! :p

what is so special about Longhorn???
i know it will be improved in the graphics and also the file system, for example you can search it easier and faster access...
this file system, (WinFS) will replace NTFS and also FAT32 :p
in addition, new security features will be included alo.

besides that, is there anything special about it?
i am curious about that but i just know that i have to upgrade or even bought a new PC to fit with this OS.

Posted by: pc_boy

I can't stant that name: "longhorn" why do they name it that way. Sheesh

Posted by: OIDanTheManIO

Do you know what they are going to call this new version when it is released? I mean the name 'Longhorn' is just a codename for now.

Posted by: IBMan

i have no idea wat its called but yea, just to clear things up, it will not be called longhorn, probably another 2 letter name like XP, XP had a codename "whistler" and i believe 2000 was cairo?

Posted by: gaara

As long as they don't release Longhorn prematurely as they did with service pack 2, I'm expecting it to be a pretty large leap from XP. I'm actually hoping that they choose to go about the same root as OS X did, eliminating old backward compatibility programming to increase overall peformance.

Microsoft has set the target the date for 2006. Is this an actuality ... or did i misread something?

Posted by: oubobcat4

ive heard the interface will be completly 3D

Alright, i have been covering the process of Longhorn for a few months now, and this is what I've come up with.

The beta release is scheduled for May of 2005 (comin up soon)
The final release is slated for December 2006, but Gates warns that it may take a bit longer.

1. New file system - The thought process behind this is simple, how come google can search 8 billion pages in less than a second, and windows takes 5-10 mins to search through only a few thousand to maybe one or two hundred thousand files? WINFS is supposed to have a fantastic indexing service AND force files to remain defragmented. So disk defgragger may remain a thing of the past. BUT WINFS has run into some problems and unless they can make up for lost time, WINFS may be relased after Longhorn is as a patch.

2. Graphics - Code named Avalon will turn the computing world upside-down. Microsoft is somewhat copying what SUN microsystems is doing with their new OS. Go to http://www.sun.com/software/looking_glass/demo.xml to see a demonstration of what SUN is coming up with. Longhorn is supposed to be similar to this.

3. Scalability - Most recently, Longhorn has been boasted to be EXTREMELY scalable. 4 different settings allow both New and old machines to run. Although the highest setting will require a 64 meg or higher video card and at least 512 megs of RAM. For an OS, that is a lot to ask, don't believe me? look at the specs that XP need. XP doesn't need a lot of hardware at all.

4. Gates has boasted longhorn to be the biggest change to the windows desktop since 1995, and anyone reading this knows the HUGE change between windows 3.1 and windows 95.

There are many other things about longhorn that I have learned, and i have even gotten a few screen shots. If you want to learn more, or have a question to ask, e-mail me at bty026@students.jwu.edu or just post it here and i will respond to it.

Would you mind posting the screenshots? I am interested in this.

Posted by: b_young86

Took me a while, but i found some good screen shots. go to http://www.winbeta.org/articles.php?action=show&id=15&perpage=1&pagenum=4 and check around. this is supposedly the build that microsoft was handing out to the WINHEC 2005 attendees, it's not even beta yet, and has VERY little hardware support, but it's graphics preview looks pretty sweet, and is only going to get better.

****, nice

thx, i might check out the beta

You guys may want to subscribe to this thread to keep updated on the news of microsoft's project code-named Longhorn.

Microsoft is looking to push the x64. What does this mean? according to Bob Mugila, Senior Vice president, "We are currently looking at making the Longhorn version of SBS 64-bit only! (I said this last week at Winhec, and now I'm in trouble with my marketing team, but what the heck.) We've got push this transition forward as quickly as possible."
This means that the server edition of Longhorn will only be 64 bit.
I will post more news at it comes, along with a link to where to download the beta when it is released.

More delays

Seems that microsoft has done what they always do, trying to put a lot of modern technology, on an older foundation. They reached the limit of the underpinnings of longhorn which were originally made for XP. So now the 4000 series builds have been scrapped, and the microsoft team is back to the drawing board. Looks like it may be even more time till we get a beta release.
Things like this make me want to switch to linux.

512 megs of ram is not enough base system on nlong horn is 8 gigs unlike the 6 xp uses

when you run xp on a 512 comp if it hase less than about 10 gigs of free hd space you are running with comprestion

o ps onghorn is probably not going to have a fixed or static filesystem so when you install the os on a terabyte it will get indexd to all heck so it uses the entire disk if you run out of space file will get dynamicly compressed

I saw this article/information regarding MS's codename history... I know it's a late post, but it's somewhat relevant. (and interesting)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_codenames

The additional information regarding Longhorn is interesting too:

Not released yet (as of May 2005). Named after a bar in the Whistler-Blackcomb resort; initially planned as an "interim release" between "Whistler" and "Blackcomb".

Posted by: Tyler1989

Get this XP= from Whistler
Longhorn Code name = from Longhorn
Blackcomb Code name = from Blackcomb

All Three locations are in the same part of Canada I bet the enxt codename will be some where in that area.

You can view the official hardware requirements from microsoft in this guide http://www.tech-forums.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=57368 as well as some other info.

Hey guys, it's been a long time since I made a post on here. As i am sure most of you are aware of, Longhorn as since been renamed Windows Vista. I have a beta copy and it seems to run pretty smoothly minus a few hardware clitches.

Another new development is that Vista won't be released until January or Febuary of 2007. So if you are planning on purchasing a new computer, wait until after the holidays to get one with vista preloaded. Also, those gamers who have been waiting for Halo 2 to come out on the PC, looks like you will have to upgrade to Vista because it will only support Vista. I'm sure there will be a crack soon enough after it is released, but with all the hype around Vista, it makes sence to upgrade to at least check out the new features it offers.

Again, it's been a while since any posts were made, so maybe we can revive this thread with some screenshots and questions and whatnot.
