im doing a linux install on my brand new 160 gig sata hdd but when i get to the partition the harddrive part of the install it says it cant find one. i found it in the bios and did some low level formatting there and still nothing. i tried fendora, rh 9 and mandrake. sata is through some silicon image controller thing

arent RH 9, mandrake 9.2 and fendora all 2.4? they're the most recent versions available (for free)

you're right, they are all running 2.4.x kernels. Go to http://www.kernel.org and see if you can find the support specs for the new 2.6.x kernel. There may be support for your drive there.

are there any free distros with kernel 2.6? or with 2.4.22? any way i cold get a driver installed before the rest of the os?

mandrake is 2.4.22 ..... but none of the drivers listed in the install work with my chip: a silicon image sil3114. any where i can find a driver for it and if so how would i install it
