Using OS Mavericks and dual displays

I just updated to OS Mavericks. Is there any way I can use my external display soley and turn the Mac screen off or close it completely and just use the external display? I have tried, but cannot seem to find an option that let's me turn off the Mac screen.

With the external monitor plugged in and turned on, close your laptop so it goes to sleep, and wake it up with the keyboard or the mouse. OS X should recognize the external monitor as the only available monitor.

I tried and the computer will not not turn on without the screen open.
